He grew up in the Phillips area, where he attended school, completing the 11th grade, when he had to leave school to care for his mother and do the farming after his father's death. On June 20, 1935, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Arnett at York, Nebraska. They continued to farm on the Purdy family farm where he had lived for 85 years. Alvin was a member of the Phillips United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Charles, Everett, Howard, and Raymond; 2 sisters, Eva England, and Myrtle Wadkins; 3 half-brothers, Rollie, Frank and Clarence; and 2 half-sisters, Lula Bierbower, and Hattie Baker. Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife Dorothy of Phillips; 2 sons, Darrell of Aurora, and Eldon of Omaha; one daughter, Marilyn (Mrs. Dale) Stueven of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
