Special to News-Telegraph WIOTA, Ia., May 9, 1912 - The sad news came to the people of this community on Wednesday evening of the sudden death of Miss Alvina Behnken, the sixteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Behnken of Franklin township on Wednesday about noon. The young lady was apparently in her usual health. She had attended the Ufken-Bannick wedding on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday morning she seemed to be very much exhausted. After finishing her morning work, she left the room and the family supposed she had gone to take a nap. At noon she did not appear and in the afternoon she was discovered hanging in the auto shed. The coroner, Nels Jensen, was called from Atlantic and arrived in an auto at about 5 o'clock, but no explanation could be found for the strange deed except that Miss Behnken had exhausted herself to an extreme degree at the wedding, but had spent a very happy evening. Deceased was born in Franklin township September 1, 1894 where her parents have lived nearly ever since their marriage. Alvina had many friends in this community, who will be grieved to hear of her death. She leaves three sisters, Minnie, Katie, and Bertha, and three brothers, John, Peter, and Otto, beside her parents, to mourn her death. The family have the sympathy of this community in their sad bereavement. The funeral will be held at the home on Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Mr. Bannick, the groom at the wedding, was an uncle of the dead girl. It is said that Miss Behnken had no love affair and so far as is known there was no cause for her rash act except that she may have gone suddenly insane, there being insanity in the family. The young woman had carefully planned the suicide and had fastened an inch rope around a rafter in the shed. She then fixed a keg beneath it and standing on same fastened the rope tightly about her neck. She then stepped from the keg. Her neck was broken by the action. Dr. Barnett of Cumberland was called when the body was found but the girl had been dead several hours. The coroner's jury consisted of J. S. Bell, H. W. Eilts, and J. T. Waters. Their verdict was that the deceased came to her death by hanging, the result of her own act, cause unknown. Adams County Free Press May 15, 1912 Page 8 Alvina Behnken, the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Behnken, living nine miles northwest of Cumberland, committed suicide last Friday. About 10 o'clock she disappeared and it was supposed she had gone to her room to take a nap, but later in the day when it was found that she was not in her room, a search was made for her and her lifeless remains were found hanging in the buggy shed. She had gotten upon a nail keg and tied a rope around a girder, fastened the other end around her neck and stepped off.
