That Peter Behnken, young farmer living south of the city, who was found dead near his home late yesterday, committed suicide is generally conceded today. The circumstances surrounding the death indicate this. It is supposed Behnken was driven to the act by worry over a court order citing him to appear July 1 and give an accounting of his administration of his father's estate. Sheriff McKee had served the order on Behnken day before yesterday. The citation had been issued by the clerk of the district court on order of the court. Behnken had appeared worried after the of the sheriff, say the hired men employed on the farm. Behnken was named administrator of the estate of his father, Cluas Behnken, February 12, 1917. He had failed to make the required yearly reports. Two of these should have been made. He had been notified by letter to make the reports. He did not heed the letter. It was then the court ordered him cited to appear July 1. The estate of the elder Behnken included 280 acres of land in Franklin township and a considerable amount of personal property. When Behnken's body was found yesterday it was about 100 yards from the house. It was found shortly after he had taken his shot gun and said he was going out to shoot a bird. One of the hired men heard a shot. When Behnken did not return they started a search. The body was found near a fence. The muzzle of the gun was toward the body. A stick with a projecting twig, the latter almost touching the trigger, lay beside the gun. Apparently Behnken had put the muzzle of the gun to his head and pressed the trigger with the stick. The entire top of the man's head was blown off. Henry Filsky and John Ufken were the hired men who found the body. Coroner Stults visited the Behnken home but did not consider it necessary to hold an inquest. Behnken lived on a farm six miles south of Atlantic on the Olive street road. He owned the farm. He was considered in prosperous circumstances. Behnken had been married the second time. His first wife died. He is survived by his wife and child and by his mother and three sisters and two brothers. The latter are Mrs. Minnie Behrends, Mrs. Katherine Maas, and Bertha Behnken, and John and Otto Behnken. The husband of Mrs. Maas, George Maas, was killed in an automobile accident several months ago. A sister of Behnken took her own life several years ago. Funeral services for Peter Behnken will be held Saturday afternoon at 8 o'clock at the Franklin township church. The Rev. J. H. Lindemeyer will officiate. Contributor: JSC (47288119)
