Description	:	Amanda Johanna (Jepsen) Pickel (1900 - 1984) Amanda Johanna Pickel was born on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa, February 21, 1900, the daughter of Fred and Margaret Marquardt Jepsen. Read More	Amanda Johanna (Jepsen) Pickel (1900 - 1984) Amanda Johanna Pickel was born on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa, February 21, 1900, the daughter of Fred and Margaret Marquardt Jepsen. When she was an infant she was baptized at the Soldier Township Lutheran Church and later confirmed at what is now the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Amanda was raised on the family farm and received her formal education at the local rural schools near her home. After her schooling, she was employed by area residents doing domestic work. On January 22, 1932, Amanda was united in marriage with Hans Pickel at Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Schleswig where her husband operated a Blacksmith Shop for many years. In 1965, they retired and moved to Denison. Hans died August 17, 1981, and Amanda continued to reside in Denison and for the past several months had made her home at the Denison Care Center. Amanda died Saturday evening, March 31, 1984, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 84 years, 1 month, and 10 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Amanda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son Walter Pickel, one daughter, Mary Busch, five brothers, Fred, Herman, William, Edward and Henry Jepsen, and three sisters, Emma, Annie and Mary. She is survived by one daughter, Cindy, Mrs. Les Campbell of Dumas, Texas, Jerry Owings, who was raised in the Pickel home of Mori Arty, New Mexico, three grandchildren, one sister, Ella Kuehnhold of Denison, one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Peter and Jane Pickel of Schleswig and Elsie Jepsen of Charter Oak. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends, many of which reside in Germany. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 1984, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mr. Art Beeck singing "Beyond the Sunset" and "Rock of Ages" with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Casket bearers included Vernon Kuehnhold, Alfred Jepsen, Herman Jepsen, Jr., Bill Jeschke, Bernhard Pickel and Wilbert Pickel. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig.
