Description	:	Ambrose Taylor Brown 1869-1940. Better known as A.T. or Bruce Brown. He came to the Monon community in the spring of 1893. He was one of ten children born to John and Catherine (Hunt) Brown. When he was four years old is father died; leaving the widowed mother to raise eight surviving children. At the age of twelve he was formally started upon his self-supporting career when he was employed by a neighboring farmer; at a very small monthly wage. He continued to live with this farmer for a period of seven years where his wages gradually advanced... Read More	Ambrose Taylor Brown 1869-1940. Better known as A.T. or Bruce Brown. He came to the Monon community in the spring of 1893. He was one of ten children born to John and Catherine (Hunt) Brown. When he was four years old is father died; leaving the widowed mother to raise eight surviving children. At the age of twelve he was formally started upon his self-supporting career when he was employed by a neighboring farmer; at a very small monthly wage. He continued to live with this farmer for a period of seven years where his wages gradually advanced to $22.00 per month. At the age of 19 he started out on his own account, renting land from his former employer. By the end of five years, Bruce had accumulated a very modest capitol and at that time he moved to Monon community where, with his brother Brasier H., he bought the Robert Little farm 5 1/2 miles northeast of Monon. At the end of three years he sold his interest and then bought land west of Monon, where his brother John G. had first lived, upon coming to the Monon area. Still later Bruce moved to the Curtis farm east of Monon (or St. Road 16). For the next seven years he operated the nearly 1000 acres on shares. During that time he was one of the largest livestock raisers in White County. In 1908, Mr. Brown moved 1/4 mile west of Monon, where he devoted his attention primarily to farming, buying, selling and raising livestock and engaged in the dairy industry. By this time he owned about 400 acres of valuable land. In 1895, A.T. married Margaret E. Olentine who was the daughter of Richard Newkirk and Mary Jane (Applegate) Olentine. Five children were born in this union of marriage. Ruth, Ora B., Curtis M., Kenneth P. and Donald L.. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were fine people and they took great pride in raising their children in a good Christian home. Mr. Brown died in 1940 and his wife died in 1945.
