Read More	The following information was obtained from the Gresham Centennial History Book: Vol. 1. Ami Douglas Sperry grew to manhood in Grant and LaFayette counties in Wisconsin and was educated in a log schoolhouse in Wisconsin. He helped in the work on his father's farm then enlisted in the Federal Forces for service in the Civil War. He served with Company 1, Second Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry, beginning service on October 7, 1863. The regiment operated through Mississippi and Tennesse and took part in numerous engagements, notably the second fight at Champion Hill and the Battle of King Creek, Mississippi, where he received a gunshot wound in the left arm which disabled him for a time. He served under three noted Cavalry officers: Generals Grierson, Slocum, and Dana. After the surrender of General Lee, the regiment was put under the command of General Custer, and marched up the Red River to Alexandria, LA and Austin, TX where Ami was discharged on November 15, 1865. After Ami's discharge from the Army, he worked for his father and in the neighborhood on farms. He started auctioneering at the age of twenty years and was successful at it for forty years. He married Mary Louisa Knouse on July 14, 1867. Shortly after this, the couple came to Lincoln via train, then completed their journey in a lumber wagon to a homestead about six miles east of the town now called Gresham, NE. They put up a sod house in which the family lived for five years. About this time he was practically penniless, having but two dollars in money. He had a family of three children and was without credit, without friends and without work, except for shucking corn at fifty cents a day. However, he had a stout heart and neighbors helped by loaning him a team to work the farm and from that time forward things began to take an upward turn. In the third year of his residence on the homestead, he bought a yoke of oxen and haulted his first wheat to Lincoln. He and his family like others suffered from the effects of the grasshopper siege. Other incidents provided obstacles to success, but the family soon owned 1040 acres of prime land, which was later divided among his children- which numbered thirteen altogether. Of these, seven children died at a very young age. Those children were an infant daughter, Scott, Essie M., Sophronia M, John A., another infant daughter, and Mary L. The other six grew to adulthood and lived in Gresham or near it on farms. These children were Robert Henderson, Alfred Wade, Benjamin Knouse, Arthur Douglas, Roda May and Sabra Adeline. In 1913, Ami retired from an active life on the farm and moved into Gresham, where he resided until his death in 1933. His wife, Mary Louisa, passed away in 1914 and Ami later married Ida M. Atherton.
