Born October 15, 1926 in Clarksville, Va., Amos served in the U.S. Army and Air Corps as an Aircraft Mechanic before moving to Crewe. A mechanic of something all his life, be it autos, boats, or planes, he was initially employed by Schaubach Auto upon moving to Crewe. He later ran the projector at the Theater that once was on the main street of Crewe. He delivered mail in Crewe for nearly 33 years while operating his own auto repair shop on Tyler Street. After retirement from the post office, Famous Amos stayed active working many part time jobs such as operating a tow truck, operating taxis for railroad workers and Medicare patients, auto repair for Baldwin's auto, and continuing auto repairs in his shop. Amos was a lifelong auto-racing fan who had the great pleasure of hanging out with some of the legends of NASCAR; however, he took even more pleasure in sharing his many NASCAR stories. Amos was a devoted husband and father and cared for his two dogs like he did with all things in life, with much love. In lieu of flowers, make donations to the Crewe Fire Department or Rescue Squad, or the SPCA. Memorial services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Crewe Baptist Church, with visitation to follow in the fellowship hall.
