Description	:	Amos P. West was born in Highland county, Ohio, May 11, 1824. His father was John West, born in Richmond, Virginia. His mother was Barbara Platter, a native of Kentucky. John West grew to manhood in the good state of Virginia and then emigrated to Ohio. There were 8 children in the family and Amos was the 5th child and the last survivor. In 1848 Amos P. West was born in Highland county, Ohio, May 11, 1824. His father was John West, born in Richmond, Virginia. His mother was Barbara Platter, a native of Kentucky. John West grew to manhood in the good state of Virginia and then emigrated to Ohio. There were 8 children in the family and Amos was the 5th child and the last survivor. In 1848 Amos P. West made his first trip to the western country and settled in Brunswick, Missouri, later moving to Ottumwa and Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He returned to Ohio the year following his arrival in Iowa, but came west again and located in Knox county, Illinois, in 1851, where he remained until 1856. He purchased land there but sold out and came to Iowa, locating on a quarter section of land lying just east of the present site of Villisca. He and his brother John, better known as Jack, were associated in the land business and remained so until the time of Jack's death. They bought land and during the hard times of 1856 and 57 were unable to dispose of it, so they decided to improve it. In 1859 they purchased the farm known as the Lawrence Place just across the line in Page county southwest of Villisca and in 1862 bought the tract of land later known as the Niles Bros. farm now owned by Fryer Bros.. Amos built a house on this place while his brother, Jack resided on the other farm. Jack West died in the spring of 1865 and the property divided between his heirs and Amos. Having started life as a farmer, stock raiser, and shipper, he continued to follow the business and he enjoyed a most worthy success. He accumulated considerable wealth and at the time of his demise was reckoned to be one of the most well to do men of the community. In November of 1874, he moved to Villisca and established his home on West 3rd Avenue, where last week his death occurred. In 1881 he sold the Niles Farm and engaged the loan business with his son Albert P. West. In 1883 he purchased the banking business of A. W. Sweet, which afterward became the Citizens Bank of Villisca of which Amos West was the president. In 1895 it became the Farmers Bank. Mr West continued as its president and in 1905 it became a national bank and was named the Villisca National Bank. Amos was its president and one of the largest share holders at the time of his death. Mr. West was married 3 times. His first wife was Elizabeth Bundy and they were married in Knox county, Illinois. They were the parents of 2 children, Albert P. West of Villisca and one child who died in infancy. On July 5, 1861 Amos married his second wife, Nannie M. C. Patton. She was the sister of John M. Patton of Villisca. The marriage took place in Highland county Ohio. Two children were born, C. J. West of Cincinnati, Ohio and an infant that died in infancy. Forty-five years ago (~1866)Mr. West united in marriage to Mrs. L--da Elliot of Greenfield, Ohio. There were 2 children by this union, Mrs. Laura Knuth of Los Angeles, California and the late John B. West. His last wife died in September 18--. Internment was in the family lot in the Villisca Cemetery. Condensed from the Villisca Review - May 4, 1911.
