McDONALD, DESPONDENT, SUICIDES Amos Wilson McDonald, 72, died Thursday, 5:00 a.m. at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, from self-inflicted wounds. Apparently despondent since the death of his wife eight weeks ago, Mr. McDonald made the attempt on his life about 3:30 P.M. Wednesday at his residence, 159 East Chicago Street, using a .22 rifle he had borrowed from a neighbor. He was taken to the Community Health Center, Coldwater, where a blood transfusion was given and then rushed to Ann Arbor for surgery for the removal of the bullet which had lodged in the brain. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2:00 p.m. from the Diedrich Funeral Home. Rev. William Cruthers will officiate and burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Mr. McDonald, a farmer by occupation, was born October 30, 1879 at South Solon, Ohio, the son of Robert and Hannah Weese McDonald. He was married September 1, 1900 to Laura O. (Olive) Kinkade at Van Wert, Ohio. He had resided in Quincy since 1934, coming here from Eaton Rapids. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Jones of Quincy and Mrs. Mary Mettler of Hillsdale; 2 sons, Fred and Robert, both of Coldwater, and six grandchildren Submitter's Note: David Renshaw, librarian at the Coldwater [Michigan] Branch District Library, also sent this: "I also found obits in the Coldwater Daily Reporter that is the same except for 2 paragraphs:" COLDWATER [Michigan] DAILY REPORTER, THURSDAY, 03 APRIL 1952, P-1. COL.6. . . . As the death of the aged man occurred, at Ann Arbor, the Coroner of Washtenaw County had jurisdiction as to whether or not an inquest should be held. . . . Sheriff Karl E. Kaellner and Deputy Harvey Norman met the Diedrich ambulance at the Community Health Center, in Coldwater. Mr. Diedrich is a deputy Sheriff and telephoned the sheriff’s office in Coldwater as to what had occurred and asked that Coldwater officers meet him, which they did.
