Inf., G.A.R. --∼Coon Rapids Enterprise April 4, 1930 Andrew Graves, one of the two remaining civil war veterans of this community, passed to the great beyond at his home early Sunday morning, largely due to the infirmities of old age, having lived over the average time allotted to man. He was one day over 85 years when death came, his birthday being Saturday, March 29th. Andrew W. Graves was born in Astubulua county, Ohio, March 29, 1845. Came to Iowa with his father in 1854, settling near Independence, Iowa. In 1860 moved to Irving in Benton county and to Carroll county in 1868. Enlisted January 1, 1864, and was mustered in February 6,-1864. Was a member of Co. I, 2nd Infantry. Transferred to Co. G when the non-veterans were mustered out. Was in the 2nd Division, 16th Army Corps, then to the Atlanta campaign, then to the 4th Division, 15th Corps, marching to the sea and up through the Carolinas. After the surrender of Gen Johnson, marched to Washington, D. C. Was in the grand review, camped around Washington three weeks, then went to Louisville, Kentucky. In camp at this point until mustered out in July, 1865, always serving as a private. Coming back to Iowa after being released from the army Mr. Graves settled on a farm three miles north of Coon Rapids where he continued to live until about 1909 when he moved with his family to Coon Rapids. He was married October 26th, 1879, to Miss Emma J. Foxworthy, to whom four children were born— Roy L., now living at Grantsburg, Wisconsin, Vava L., Paul L., and Walton, deceased. Mr. Graves' great-grandfather was a revolutionary soldier, his grand father a soldier in the war of 1812 and his father a .soldier in the Mexican. Mr. Graves, besides being a pioneer, was one of the most highly esteemed men of the county, having a record for an exemplary life. He has always shown an interest in the community and believed in progress. Mr. Graves has been a continuous reader of The Enterprise since its birth—1882, a period of more than forty-eight years. Mr. Graves was a lifelong member of the Masonic fraternity and in 1888 with his companion united with the Star Methodist Episcopal church, later transfering his membership into Coon Rapids. The funeral rites were held from the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W. F. Clayburg officiating. Interment was made in the Coon Rapids. The American Legion had charge of the funeral, giving their comrade a military burial.
