Goeken was found at 10:30 a.m. Monday about 165 yards downstream from his home in a flooded field. He was found by his son, Alvin Goeken of rural Stanton. The death was ruled as a drowning by Cuming County Sheriff Larry Thiem, who is acting as the county coroner on the case. State Civil Defense officials confirmed on Tuesday that Goeken's is the first death related to the weekend's flooding reported in the state. Goeken was recovering from recent hip surgery and walked with the assistance of a walker He lived 2 1/4 miles south and one mile west of West Point and one mile east of the Elkhorn. Flood waters on and around Goeken's land were above fence level, Theim said. Theim said it's likely Goeken was inspecting the area on foot when he was swept away by flood waters. The Sheriff said Goeken's family did not report him missing when they noticed he was gone Saturday evening. However, family members and others did conduct a search of the area using airboats. Goeken was a staff sergeant in the Ari Force from February 1941 to Sept. 1945, and later worked as an airplane mechanic. He married Mary Steffensmeier on Jul 24, 1945 at Monterey.
