Andrew Baxter was born March 15, 1813, in Washington county,Penn., ans died at the home of his son, Miles, in Auburn, IN, December 18, 1903, aged 90 years and 3 days. William Baxter and his wife, Sarah Rogers Baxter, came from their home in Dungannon, county Tyrone, Ireland, and in the year 1791 settled on a farm near what is now Monongahela? City in Washington county, PA., where they reared a family of nine children of which Andrew was the youngest, and the survivor by several years. The deceased was first married in Wayne county, Ohio, to Nancy Brown, eldest daughter of Andrew and Eleanor Richey Brown and in 1841 removed with his young wife and two children to the land theretofore entered from the government, in section five in Franklin township, Dekalb county where he continued to live until October 1, 1901, when he went to live with his children in Auburn. There were born to this marriage nine children, but four of whom are now living. His wife Nancy, died died January 18, 1857 and in March 1858 he again married, this time to Elizabeth Brown, the younger sister of his first wife. To this union were born six sons, five of whom are still living. Andrew Baxter was of hardy Scotch-Irish parentage, and of the nine brothers and sisters, excepting Daniel, who died from an injury received by a violent fall and John who died many years since inn this country, of typhoid fever, they all lived to be very old, the average age being more than 80 years. They were reared in the Presbyterian church and faith, a family of farmers with industrious ans regular habits, and had their reward in the enjoyment of vigorous health, happy dispositions and long life. While the deceased never united with any church, he always held the church in great reverence, and never countenanced any comment or conduct intended to bring reproach upon Christ or His cause. He has lived more than a score of years past the time alloted to man. He will be remembered and missed by many whom he has helped and cheered in their earlier struggles for a foothold from which to gain an education or livelihood. The remains were buried at Hamilton, at one o'clock, Monday, December 21st where rest the bodies of his two wives, two children, his mother, two sisters, and one brother.
