Taps sounded for another one of our veterans of the Civil War, when A.B. Rock of this place passed away at his home Saturday morning, July 1st, following an illness of some months. The funeral services were held from the United Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.H. McCormick. The interment was in Elmwood cemetery, members of the local American Legion Post acting as escort. The salute to the dead was fired by the firing squad and taps sounded. Andrew Bower Rock was born at Fairhaven, Preble county, Ohio, December 18, 1837. His parents were Robert and Jane Hamilton Rock. Mr. Rock spent his early life on a farm near Fairhaven, Ohio, until he answered his country’s call to service and enlisted in Co. D. of the 47th Ohio Vol., on July 16, 1861 at Cleveland, Ohio. He was with his company in the battles of Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, and Lookout Mountain and other engagements, and accompanied Sherman on his march to the sea. He was mustered out at Little Rock, Ark., August 11, 1865. On February 22, 1866, he was united in marriage to Martha Frances Worden. The following children were born to these parents: Lora of Morning Sun; Curtis E., who died March 9, 1896; Mrs. Mary Sutcliff, Clarksville, Iowa; Mrs. Vira Keck and Howard of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Carrie Lambert of Douglas, Ariz.; Mrs. Ada Smith of National City, Cal.; Mrs. Emma Liggett of Phoenix Ariz.; and elmer of Morning Sun; he also leaves a half-sister, Mrs. Thos. Harris of Morning Sun. At twelve years of age Mr. Rock united with the church at Hopeville, Ohio. Later in life he was elected a ruling elder in this congregation. In 1881 the Rock family emigrated to the community of Morning Sun, Iowa, where Mr. and Mrs. Rock spent the remainder of their days, enjoying that quiet and peaceful life which was most precious to them. Mrs. Rock departed this life September 8, 1920. Since coming to this community this family have been worthy and honored members of the United Presbyterian church of Morning Sun, Mr. Rock for a time serving this congregation as an elder. During their declining years Mr. and Mrs. Rock have had the kind and loving ministry of their daughter Lora, who did much to make the evening time of her parents’ life a time of comfort, peace and joy. Mr. Rock will be missed from his home, the church, from his circle of comrades of the Civil War, and from the community.
