Every citizen will learn of the death of Mr. Andy Carothers with regret. He was in every way a good man. He was a source of strength to his church, his neighbors and the Republican party he loved so well. He was a kind husband, a tender father. He was plain of dress and speech: but he was a man of honor, of good sense. We pay tribute to him as one who lived well and blamelessly. When called to serve the people as county superintendent he did his duty. When called to battle for his country he was a loyal soldier, manly and courageous. We bid him farewell with sorrow and extend the sympathy of all who knew him to his bereaved family. (Page 6) Andy Carothers Slowly Recovering From His Severe Illness. A. Carothers is much better, being able to be around again. (Page 8) DEATHS Carothers. A. Carothers, who has been ill some weeks, is referred to in letters from correspondents as being well again but Wednesday morning while assisting his son to load hogs he was overcome and died soon after he was carried into the house. The funeral was Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Sermon by Rev. J. B. Richardson. Members of the G. A. R. post and Knights of Honor joined the great crowd of friends who attended the services. —————●————— WILLOW GROVE AND CARSON. The people of this vicinity have been called upon to mourn the death of one of their most honored and highly respected citizens; Andrew Carothers. Mr. Carothers was an old soldier of the civil war. He was also a true soldier to Christ and did much toward leading souls to the master. His words of hope and encouragement will no longer be heard but we may be sure that he is happier and better off in that heavenly home. He died at his home in Carson district, June 13, 1894, aged nearly 54 years. He was thought to be out of danger, when he fainted a short distance from the house and before they could get him to the house he was dead. Like a flash of lightning and a crash of thunder, out of a clear, blue sky, so came the report thoughout Walnut township Wednesday morning, June 13, that Mr. Andrew Carothers is no more among the living on earth. At first it seemed a report so unexpected cannot be true. To his warm friends thoughts like these were foremost: How can we get along without him? As a father, so much needed at home, especially for his children who lost their mother so recently; as a Christian, so ready and helpful in the church and Sunday school; as a citizen, always true and reliable for the right. How can we spare such a man at this time? The place made vacant by him—who is able or willing to fill it. A man eminent as a scholar, thinker, teacher, speaker and worker—a man yet in the prime of life, at the zenith of his usefulness—why was he taken away from us just now? During the war of the rebellion, when some of dearest, most trustworthy comrades fell in battle at our sides, there was no other alternative left but to close up the broken ranks and fill the gap. So in this case some one is needed to take Mr. Carothers' place. Who can it be? Who is willing and able? Only let us, who are specially concerned take comfort and courage from the words of the poet: "Out of stony griefs, Bethel I'll raise." For the children may we trust that a beautiful, many-colored rainbow of hope will be arched over them to cheer them, although their eyes are filled with tears and their hearts crushed with sadness. Andrew Carothers was born near Carlisle, Cumberland Co., Pa., Dec. 2, 1840, and therefore not yet 54 years of age. He was a student in Monmouth College, Ill., when the war commenced, from whence he volunteered and enlisted in Co. F. 83 Ill. Reg. He came to Brown county in 1866 and married Miss Flora J. McCune in 1867. He was superintendent of public instruction of Brown county four years. Of those who followed in the funeral procession were many of the best citizens of Hiawatha, also quite a detachment of Hiawatha Post G. A. R., six of them were pallbearers. The pastor, Rev. D. J. Treiber, Rev. J. K. Young and Prof. O. C. Hill officiated in an impressive manner at the services in the Carson Congregational church. He was interred in the Fairview cemetery. The procession was perhaps the largest ever seen in these parts. C. H. I. ——— "No life can be pure in its purpose and strong in its strife and all life not be pure and strong thereby." Mr. Carothers' living presence is gone from our midst but the memory of his strong, noble, helpful life is a blessed legacy, not alone to his children but to the church, the community, the county. The last Sunday of his life he attended church services as usual, taught his class with all his accustomed ardor, enforcing practical Christian truth in the energetic way so characteristic of him. Little did we think as he passed through the door that we should never grasp him by the hand again, or hear his hearty words of counsel. Young people and education were among the absorbing interests of this man's life. Wednesday morning he was ready to attend the Academy Commencement exercises, remarking that though he did not feel well he very much desired to see and hear the graduating class, mentioning repeatedly one young man in whom he was specially interested. One of his daughters was ready to accompany him as he had remarked that he did not like to go alone. Before going he thought he would mend a wagon tire but while working he grew faint and with the words, "You'll have to finish this," he sank to the earth. In less than twenty minutes his noble soul had answered to the roll call of the Great Commander. So ended the life of this rare man. Thursday afternoon there gathered at the Carson Congregational church, friends from far and near, thus showing their respect and love. We may well say "love" for there are many who loved him. The pastor chose as his text words, which were eminently fitting, "Well done good and faithful servant." Of truth it can be testified that A. Carothers' was a man always faithful, always to be depended upon in any good cause. Beautiful and fragrant were the flowers that had bloomed for this occasion, which the hands of sympathetic friends had arranged, many of them remembering that he loved flowers. He was laid to rest beside the wife who only eight months ago had called her family about her giving each some tender good bye. The children are doubly bereaved and it has been to them a year fraught with sadness and heartache. How vain are words of comfort for they bring no relief to the burdened hearts and yet we fain bring them.
