Read More	Death Notice : Fairview Courier - October 13, 1893 . . . Mrs. Flora McCune Carothers was born September 22, 1850, and said good-by to earth and her dear ones Sunday, October 8, 1893. The ceasing of this life touches many hearts. Having lived nearly all her life in Carson neighborhood, she was well known not only in her immediate vicinity, but throughout the county. Although for a number of years her strength has been fast failing, yet with that unselfishness which was one of her strong characteristics, she gave herself constantly to do and care for those in the home circle, her friends, her neighbors, and her church. During the two months of her last illness in which she suffered greatly, her patient and unselfish spirit was continually manifest, taking thought for those who came to care for her lest they do too much, planning for her family, inquiring for one whom she knew to be very sick, in countless little ways showing the Christ in her being. She leaves to her children a sweet memory of an unselfish, thoughtful, loving mother, which is a precious legacy they need never lose. The church of which she has been a faithful and consistent member since 1866, sustains a great loss. One who has helped in its work by her prayers, her sympathy, and her personal labor, has gone out through its doors, never again to enter. The husband, whose companion she has been for twenty-six years, her sons and daughters, and the two little ones who were just learning to say "grandma" have met with an irreparable loss. To them, and to her mother, Mrs. Susan McCune, who gave to her daughter every tender care, and to the brothers and sisters and the niece who so lovingly helped bear the burdens in this now bereaved home, are proffered the heart-felt sympathy of the many who knew and loved Mrs. Carothers. The funeral services were largely attended, and conducted in the Carson Congregational Church by her friend and pastor, Rev. D. J. Treiber, assisted by Rev. Conklin and Rev. Richardson. The text of the discourse was the comforting words of 1st Peter, 5-7: "He careth for you". The sermon, the prayers, the songs and flowers were all the offering sympathising hearts could bring, yet they were brought for love's sake. "Just as I am" was sung at the request of her, who had answered her Master's summons, "Come up higher". As we took our last look on the face we loved and saw the sweet expression of peace and rest, our hearts whispered, "It is well with her," yet the human is very strong within us and in anguish of spirit we cry out, "Why must we say the hard word, "good-bye." Poem at the bottom of the obit is as follows: "Not now but in the coming years, It may be in the better land We'll read the meaning of our tears And there sometime we'll understand. God knows the way; He holds the key; He guides us with unerring hand. Sometime with tearless eyes we'll see, Yes, there, up there, we'll understand." M. A. L.
