He was born Andrew Iven Hawkins, Jr., on June 1, 1928, the son of Andrew Iven and Blanche Irene (Thomas) Hawkins. Iven was born and raised in the community of Enterprise, Wash., near Tonasket. In February of 1946, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving until his honorable discharge in December of 1947. In 1951 Iven married Doris Reeder and the couple had two children, Cheryl and Gloria. The family moved to White Salmon in 1960, where Iven went to work for Underwood Fruit as a shipping and receiving foreman. On June 2, 1974, Iven married Janice Schilling and the couple had a son, Andy, in 1980. Iven began working for Stadelman fruit in 1982. Shortly later he drove log truck for Mountain Logging, then a fuel delivery truck for Guler Oil. At the age of 68, Iven decided to try retirement. He was soon bored and went back to work, this time for Bingen Garbage Service driving a roll off truck. Iven worked until last summer, when his health forced him to retire for good. Iven was a lifetime member of BPOE 1868 and also of the American Legion. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and especially camping. Iven had a green thumb and his gardening skills kept many people supplied with fresh vegetables. He is survived by his wife, Jan, at home in Bingen; son, Andy Hawkins of San Mateo, Calif., sisters Ellen Scott of Tacoma, Wash., Dorothy Tyson of Spokane, Wash., brother Robert Hawkins of Trail, British Columbia, three granddaughters, Cameo, Suni and Shelicca Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, sisters Wilma and Reta, and daughters Cheryl Hawkins and Gloria Hawkins. A memorial service for Iven Hawkins will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at BPOE (White Salmon Elks Lodge). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Gorge, P.O. Box 36, Hood River, OR, 97031 or to Ladies of the Elks (L.O.E.), P.O.
