Main, Council Grove, KS 66846 - recd. 12-23-02. 21 Apr. 1905 "Council Grove Guard" "A Golden Wedding." Last Thursday was a notable day in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Collier of this city. It was the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day and with their many relatives and friends present it was fittingly observed. This group and his bride of fifty years ago married in Andrews county, Missouri six years before the Civil War began. He was from Virginia and she from Kentucky. Her maiden name was Leodicia Bird. Soon after the marriage they concluded to come west. They came to a farm near Council Grove in 1857. Their residence has been continuous here since that time, making them among the three or four earliest families of this vicinity now living here. They were pioneers among the pioneers. They have been through all the county has been through since before Kansas became a state. They were here twelve years ahead of any railroad. They knew the prominent Indians of the county as we know our neighbors and they were here to see the buffalo disappear to the west in front of the white settlers. They were here in the days when the Santa Fe trail was the national highway through the state and it was a busy thoroughfare for years after they came. Figuratively speaking Council Grove was an island then, an island of a few white families surrounded by Indians. But Mr. Collier and his bride came of sturdy stock and little things like Indians and other difficulties were not considered hindrances to progress. Mr. Collier was sheriff of this county in 1858 when the Indians came to Council Grove one day bent on trouble and wounded two settlers, Parks and Gilke, before leaving. He was one of the leaders of the crowd who afterward went out on the Four Mile hills, secured the two offending Indians and brought them to town where they were afterward executed. Mr. and Mrs. Collier lived on a farm north of this city now the Holiday farm, until 1880 when they came to town. He engaged in the grocery business five years and then in feed until two years ago when he decided to retire from active business. He and his family are among the best known and most substantial families of the county. Eleven children have been born to them, two of whom died in childhood. The others are J.W. Collier of Garden City, Mrs. Elizabeth Kelly and Mrs. Josie Kelly of Denver, T.B. Collier of Marquette, Kansas, Mrs. George Phillips, of Council Grove, Mrs. W.J. Bowen of this city, Mrs. Carrie Anderson of Washington, Leonard Collier of Garden City and the youngest Miss Ethel Collier of Council Grove. Miss Ethel and T.B. Collier, Mrs. Bowen and Mrs. Phillips were the only children able to be present at the golden wedding. Some eighty other guests relatives and friends including Revs. Comer and Puckett were present. A big dinner was served and quite a collection of valuable presents were bestowed on the bride and groom of fifty years." ---- The following newspaper article about Andrew J. Collier was found in World Family Tree Vol. 1, Tree 88. "Newspaper article: A Pioneer Settler A. J. Collier Is a native of Virginia, came with his parents to Platt county, Missouri in 1837 when only four years old, remaining in that state about twenty years. He was married in 1855, and soon after came to Kansas and located on a farm a few miles north of Council Grove. In 1892 came to Council Grove engaging in the grocery business, which he followed for a period of six years, with good success. In 1887, he sold his grocery and opened a feed store, which he was successfully conduct to the present. Out of the struggle and after raising a family of nine children, Mr. and Mrs. Collier have saved enough to keep them in comfortable circumstances the remainder of life, having one of the most tasty, comfortable and convenient houses in Council Grove. Mr. Collier's residence here dates back forty years, which places him in the class of pioneer settlers. When he came the city of Council Grove consisted of about the following business buildings, all long shanties: One of the corner, where the elegant structure of the Morris County State Bank now stands; one where the fine building of the Farmers and Driver's Bank is situated, and another where the New White & Barth store building stands, and a blacksmith shop near Jas Sorter's present stand. The old Indian Mission was the only respectable building in the city. In 1858, the building now occupied by Wm Tolbert as a residence, was erected for a store building; for many years was pointed to as the beauty of the town. In 1858 Mr. Collier was elected sheriff of Morris County, succeeding himself until 1865. The fall of 1893 was honored at the democratic convention with the nomination for county treasurer. He made a splendid race, but republican votes were too numerous for him to achieve victory. He is not only among the oldest, but best citizens of our town and for honesty and integrity no one can say a word against Jack Collier, who is now taking life easy and enjoying himself to the fullest extent in his declining years.
