Ford, of Dardanelle, were held at New Hope church Saturday morning at 11:00 o'clock, burial being in New Hope Cemetery. Rev. Mr. Gray, or "Uncle Jack," as he was familiarly known of in latter years, served during the Civil War in Co. "A," 5th Mississippi Inf., entering the service of the confederacy, when less than 17 years of age and continuing a brave and valiant soldier of the "Lost Cause" until the surrender at Appomattox Court House. He limped for the rest of his life as a result of a leg wound received in the battle of Chicamauga with the 3rd. Mississippi. Like many of his comrades in the Confederate Army, he had no material interest in the war. He had no slaves to retain as he was not of the slaveholding class. He came to Yell County from Aberdeen, Miss., in the Spring of 1867, arriving in Dardanelle on March 11th, and for half a century resided on a farm within eight miles of the city. Some five years ago he removed to Magazine, where he resided at the time of his death. Rev. Gray was a minister of the Primitive Baptist and, though he never held a regular charge so far as the writer knows, he never lost an opportunity to preach God's word, often going to remote sections of the County to carry the Gospel to those who otherwise seldom had opportunity to hear it. He was a tiller of the soil as well as a minister of the gospel and few men in Yell County made more or better crops considering the means available. Mr. Gray was a man of strong convictions and fearlessly and staunchly stood for what he conceived to be right and just, yet withal he was kindly and considerate of others. He lived a long life of usefulness and service to his fellows and to his God, and when the call to rest from his labors received it bravely and resignedly. Besides his aged widow, Mary Ann (McCain), Rev. Gray is survived by six sons: George Lee Gray, of near Centerville, James Wilson Gray, Dardanelle, David Franklin Gray and Andrew Jackson Gray of near Centerville, Homer Gray, Ola, and Armour Gray, Dardanelle. The Post-Dispatch joins the sorrowing friends of this venerable and Godly man in tendering to his bereaved wife and sons deepest sympathy in their loss.
