According to the "Portrait and Biographical Album of Wapello County, Iowa," copyright 1887, Andrew was the son of Joseph Hicks, born in West Virginia and Elizabeth (Bower) Hicks, born in Ohio. According to the WPA readings, his correct date of death was May 30. I have transcribed the obituary as written. Obituary From “Ottumwa semi-weekly courier,” Tuesday, June 3, 1902, Page 5: DEATH OF A.J. HICKS Prominent Citizen of Green Township Passed Away This Morning. SUFFERED FOR WEEKS WITH APOPLEXY Funeral Services To Be Held Tomorrow Afternoon at 2 O’clock From Pleasant Ridge Church–Interment Will Be Made at That Place. [From Saturday’s Daily.] Suffering from an attack of apoplexy and for two weeks lingering between life and death Andrew J. Hicks, a prominent resident of Green township, passed away at 3:30 o’clock this morning at the age of 67 years. Funeral services will be held over the remains tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Pleasant Ridge church. The interment will be made in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery. Native of Indiana. Born in Indiana, August 11, 1832, Mr. Hicks spent the early years of his life in that state and in 1850 [sic] was married to Miss Mary A. Luther. To this union four children were born two of whom survive. In 1864 Mr. Hicks came to Wapello county and settled in Green township where he has made his home until his death. From the first day of his residence in this county it was his purpose to establish a permanent home for his family and his effort in this direction were well repaid. On December 12, 1864, occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Hicks, at the home in Green township. On April 9, 1871, Mr. Hicks married Mrs. Mahulda J. Harness. To this union there were born five children–Sylvia, Samuel L., Myrta, Harvey H. and Lee–all of whom still survive. Highly Esteemed. During the years in which Mr. Hicks has been a resident of this county he has been quite prominently connected with the interests of the community and has held at different times during his residence in Green township, all the township offices. He was a leader in politics of his community and was recognized as a man of ability. In the conducting of his private affairs of business and as a neighbor Mr. Hicks was most highly respected. Always honest and upright in his dealings with his neighbors and acquaintances he made many friends, all of whom mourn most sincerely his death. Sickness of Two Weeks. About two weeks ago Mr. Hicks was taken ill with a stroke of apoplexy and since that time has been confined to his bed. During the greater part of the time he has been in a very critical condition and though there has been very little hope for his recovery yet his death comes with great sorrow to his wife and family.
