Her name is spelled as Huldah in the marriage record. Harmonius died in 1868, and Mahulda Harness is shown in the 1870 Census of Wapello County, living in her mother Eliza Ashcraft's household with a son, Harmonious Harness, age 1 year. Mahulda was remarried on April 9, 1871, in Wapello County, to Andrew Hicks. Her son Harmonious Harness is shown in the 1880 Wapello County Census at the age of 11 as a step-son, in the A.J. Hicks house. He continued to be shown in that household in the Wapello County Census of 1885, at the age of 16. Harmonious married Leona Hampshire on June 18, 1889, in Wapello County. His name is given as Hiram, and her first name is spelled Leana on that marriage record. I have not been able to find any further information on young Harmonious aka Hiram or his wife Leona after that time. Also shown in the A.J. Hicks household in the 1880 Wapello County Census were these children: Marilda E. Hicks, F, age 19 A.J. Hicks, M, age 15 Marilda and A.J. must have been Andrew's children by a previous marriage. These children were shown with the last name of Harness, and I believe their last names were actually Hicks; in fact, Sylva, Myrtie, and Harvey are shown in the 1885 Census in this household with the last name of Hicks: Sylva Harness, F, age 9 Lane S. Harness, M. age 7 Myrtie Harness, F, age 5 Harvey H. Harness, M. age 3 In the 1885 Census, A.J.'s full name of Andrew J. Hicks is given, and along with his wife Mahulda Hicks, these children are shown as living in the household: Andrew J. Hicks, M, age 20 Marilda Hicks, F, age 24 Sylva Hicks, F, age 13 Samuel Hicks, M, age 11 (probably the Lane S. in the 1885 census) Myrtie Hicks, F, age 9 Harvey Hicks, M, age 7 Lee Hicks, M, age 4 Harmonious Harness, M, age 16 -------------------------------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Tuesday, December 11, 1917: Mrs. Mahulda Jane Hicks died at the Ottumwa hospital last night at midnight. She was 66 years of age, and has resided south of the city near Ormanville. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. R.H. White, H.H. Hicks and L.R. Hicks of Blakesburg, Samuel L. Hicks of Sanford, Colo., and Mrs. L.B. Pearson of Kingsville, Tex., Mrs. D.H. Steele and Miss Golden Hicks of Los Angeles, Cal. Her husband, Andrew J. Hicks, preceded her in death fifteen years ago. The funeral will be held in Sullivan chapel with interment in Pleasant Ridge cemetery, but the exact time has not yet been decided. Rev. W.E. Reavis will conduct the service and music will be furnished by the Colonial quartet.
