Read More	Progress Review, La Porte City, Iowa Thursday, December 4, 1947, Page 1 Death Summons Andy Lucas; Burial Friday Life-Time Resident of La Porte City Died At Bert Smelser Home Andy Lucas, 79, a life time resident of La Porte City and vicinity, passed away at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday at the home of his nephew, Bert Smelser, in the south part of town. Death was caused by uremic poisoning and dropsy with which he had been ill for several years. Two weeks before his death he began to fail rapidly, but he was confined to bed only three days. Long Time Resident Andrew Johnson Lucas, the son of Thomas and Caroline King Lucas, was born March 12, 1868 in a two story log house southeast of La Porte City in Cedar township, Benton county, Iowa. In 1876 he moved to La Porte City with his parents and lived there until his death. He graduated from the local high school, taught rural school for several terms, worked as a mason for a time, was employed five years in the local light plant and was janitor of the La Porte City school for 20 years. He was never married. After the death of his parents he made his home with his sister, Mrs. Edith Smelser and her son, Bert. Since Mrs. Smelser’s death he had lived with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Smelser. Member of Lodge He was a member of the Presbyterian church, the Odd Fellow lodge and the Good Samaritan Club of the lodge. Surviving are three nephews, Bert and Gaylord Smelser of La Porte City and Thomas Smelser of Irving, Ill. and several grandnieces and grandnephews. Last of Family He was the last member of his immediate family. His parents, four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services conducted by Mr. Henry Warkentin of the Presbyterian church, were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Johannsen funeral home. Mrs. R.T. Paige and Mrs. H. D. Kline sang, accompanied by Mrs. Clifford Burr. Casket bearers were members of the Odd Fellow lodge. The Odd Fellow ritualistic services were given by members of Lotus Lodge No. 705, I.O.O.F. both at the funeral home and at the grave. Max Thompson and Shelby Bellinger conducted the service and P.W. O’Brien gave a short eulogy. Burial was in the family lot in West View cemetery. Out of town relatives who came for the funeral were Tom Smelser, Irving, ill. and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Auguston, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gardener and Mrs. George Kinney, Waterloo.
