Description	:	Andrew (Andreas) Rasmus Gudahl was born at Styrn, Norway. Born Rasmus Andreas Rasmussen Gudahl, he was christened on Mar. 28, 1861. Shortly after immigrating to Faibault, Minnesota with his family, Andrew began working with the railroad crew that was working its way to South Dakota. Except for Andrew, the entire crew were German emigrants. Andrew left the railroad upon hearing of Miner County land opening up for homesteading. Read More	Andrew (Andreas) Rasmus Gudahl was born at Styrn, Norway. Born Rasmus Andreas Rasmussen Gudahl, he was christened on Mar. 28, 1861. Shortly after immigrating to Faibault, Minnesota with his family, Andrew began working with the railroad crew that was working its way to South Dakota. Except for Andrew, the entire crew were German emigrants. Andrew left the railroad upon hearing of Miner County land opening up for homesteading. He built a sod house on the extreme south side of the property, hoping it would deter anyone from clearing the 160 acres of land to the south. The ploy worked and that property was still available when his father and the rest of the family came to Miner County. Andrew worked as a farmer his whole life, as did his father and two brothers. Andrew had four wives. The first two wives are buried at Belleview Lutheran Cemetery. The lot numbers have since been changed, so it has not been determined where the unmarked graves are located. His first wife was Kristiane Berg/Kristianna Harald Berge. She may have died due to childbirth complications. A daughter, Berthanna, was born on Nov. 18, 1882, the year of Kristiane's death. Berthanna married Albert O. Ameson on Nov. 11, 1904. Andrew married again a year or two later to Engabor/Ingeborg Stokke. Ingeborg was the sister of his brother-in-law Ole Stokke. Ingeborg O. was born in 1863/64 and had a twin sister, Kari O. who married Johannes Rasmussen Raad. This second wife is buried in the same lot with a male named Christian, leading most to feel that she died in childbirth. A year or two later Andrew married Oline/Olina Marie Hestness. During this marriage, Andrew became a member of the Baptist church. The couple had six children and were married for eleven years before Oline/Olina died. Andrew and Oline had the following children: Christine Ida, born in 1888 and married Odin Gravermoen; Richard, born in 1889 married Emma Constance Fosheim - died before his time; Ida Marie, born in 1890, married Fred Johnson who returned to Sweden after his wife's death; Oscar Bernard, born in 1892, married Grace Viola Broyles and lived in Wyoming. Family stories say that Oscar was fed up with the weather and farming problems in Howard, so took off. He never returned to South Dakota again except for about 2 weeks before his father died; Joseph, born in 1893, married Lelia "Lila" Ursula Ady, and after her death married Ruth Pederson. Ruth was a former high school sweetheart. Joseph moved to California where Ruth lived, and was there until he died later that year; Andrew's youngest daughter Ruth, born in 1895, married Rudolph Clemetson. After the death of his third wife, Andrew did not marry again for about seven years. It appears that Andrew's younger sister Anna moved in to help with the children during this time. Andrew's fourth wife was Aase Hernes, who he met at a Baptist Convention in Chicago. Aase and her two sisters, Bertha and Carolina, worked in the sweatshops of Chicago. In Norway, Aase had worked as a prison guard. Aase's sister Bertha never married and always lived in Chicago. Caroline came to South Dakota and married a good friend of Andrew's by the name of Eric Dahl. They last lived on a farm about eight miles north of Salem. Andrew married his fourth wife in 1904/05 and had two sons. About seven years after the couple married, they took a trip back to Norway, as was documented in the local newspaper: The Miner County Democrat Mar 1, 1912 Page 5, Col. 5 "Andrew Gudahl and family left yesterday morning for Norway, where they will spend a year with relatives. They purchased tickets at the First National Bank, over the famous White Star Line." They left from New York on the Olympic, which at that time was the largest liner in service. It was built alongside its sister ship, the Titanic. The ship docked in England and Captain Smith of the Olympic went over to lead the Titanic on her maiden voyage. The Andrew Gudahl family heard about the sinking of the Titanic after arriving in Norway. Aase died in 1943, and Andrew died July 19, 1948. Both are buried at Berton Baptist Cemetery.
