(Source: Thayer County, Nebraska Marriage Records) ======================================= Andrews Sanders Russell, son of George and Amanda Russell, second eldest in a family of 14 children, was born February 26, 1875 near Sidney, Iowa, and died at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kans., May 4, 1966. In early infancy, Andy, with the family moved by covered wagon to a homestead at Speed, Kans., near Phillipsburg. Mr. Russell often related many stories concerning hardships, trials, and experiences of the pioneer days. When he was 12 years of age, they moved to a farm 6 miles north of Hubbell, Nebr. In the early 1890's, they moved to the southeast Kansas-northwest Arkansas area, returning again to the same farm north of Hubbell in 1895 or 1896. He had lived in the Hubbell and Chester areas all the rest of his life. Mr. Russell had been a member of the Methodist Church since early youth. He was united in marriage to Sybil Van Cleef on March 11, 1903. To this union 6 children were born. They were engaged in farming until about 20 years ago when they retired. Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his wife in December, 1964; a daughter, Velma in August, 1935; and all except two of his 14 brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Lucille, Mrs. Irwin Elliott of Littleton, Colo. and Roberta, Mrs. Howard Johnson of Pawhuska, Okla.; three sons, Raymond of Lincoln, Dean and George of Chester; two sisters, Jessie Scott of Salt Lake City, Utah and Viola Luce of Leoti, Ks.; 14 grandchildren and 16 grandchildren (NOTE: I think this should say great grandchildren). Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, May 7, at the Chester Methodist Church, the Rev. Marlon Loftis officiating. Mrs. Dolan Frye was organist. The pallbearers were Leslie Hartley, Willis Mumm, Kenneth Adamson, Gerald Woodside, James Posey and Martin Schlife. Interment was in the Chester Cemetery, Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Service in charge.
