Died near his home, seven miles northwest of Osceola, October 14, 1903, aged seventy years, nine months and sixteen days. When but a child he moved with his parents to Indiana where he lived until about ten years of age when the family moved to Albia, Iowa. here he grew to manhood and was married to Mary J. Hollingshead, September 21, 1851. In 1853 he and his wife moved to the farm in this county where he has since resided, living for forty years upon one farm. He was the father of ten children, seven girls and three boys, all of whom have grown to manhood and womanhood in this county and all whom survive their father. The children are Mrs. Magaret Day of Alamosa, Col., Mrs. Ella Coxe, of Dalhart, Texas, Mrs. Binnie Young, of Bullarsville, Ill., Mrs. Retta Titus, of Tower Hill, Ill., E. E. Stephenson, of Laymon, Okla., Mrs. Ida Nance, of Osceola, L. L., J. F., Mrs. Jesse Marler and Miss Alice Stephenson all of Clarke county. There are twenty six grandchildren that also survive to mourn for a grandparent. Mr. Stephenson united with the Church of Christ about thirty seven years ago and lived a devoted Christian life, serving the church as elder for several years. His death came very sudden like a blight of killing frost, cutting him down in a moment. On Wednesday, October 14th, he left home about 1 p.m. to go for some cattle and while driving them home was stricken when within one and on half mile of home with something like apoplexy. He was a devoted husband, an indulgent father, a good citizen and neighbor, as attested by the large number present at his funeral which was held from the house, Saturday October 17th. The body was interred in the Cox cemetery. May the comfort and consolation of religion be the portion of the bereaved family. may we all be admonished by his sudden death, to be ready at all times to meet our God for we know not the hour of his calling.
