Scarcely anyone in town knew that Mr. Thompson had not been in his usual health. And, in fact, he had been up and around all the time, attending to the chores around the place, though slightly under the weather, but so slight that no one, even in the family, had thought of anything serious. On Monday evening he had eaten supper and was lying down on the couch in the sitting room when suddenly one of the boys noticed something peculiar about his breathing and almost before he could reach his side he had passed away. Andrew Thompson was born in Montello, Wisconsin, June 11, 1851. On January 1, 1873, at Buffalo, Wisconsin, he was married to Carrie Round who died three years later leaving one daughter, now Mrs., Carrie P. Smith, of Santa Paula, California. His second marriage was to Sarah B. McDowell at Buffalo, Wisconsin, on July 4, 1883. With his bride he immediately came to Wessington where he had already filed on a homestead the preceeding fall and established a home where they have resided continuously ever since. Four children, David A., Howard E., Frank M. and Alice J. now Mrs. C. H. Hanson, of Huron, were born and grew to maturity on the farm, all worthy offspring of a noble father and mother. The oldest son, David, gave his life for his country over in France in the World War. Frank resides on the old home farm and Howard just across the road. For several years past, Mrs. Thompson has been a great sufferer with rheumatism and Mr. Thompson had ministered to her almost constantly. In early life Mr. Thompson united with the Presbyterian Church at Buffalo, Wisconsin. He was a member of Wessington Lodge No. 107 A.F. & A.M., the A.O.U.W. and the Modern Woodmen, carrying insurance in the last two. In the earlier days he served in various official capacities in the Masonic Lodge where he was always considered a most honored member. Besides the immediate family there are surviving him the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Omar Fuller, of Madison, S.D., Mrs. Nate Popham, of Rockford, Iowa, Robert Thompson, of Pardeeville, Wisc., Henry and James Thompson, of Montello, Wisc., Wm. Thompson, of Decorah, Iowa, Frank Thompson, of Kenosha, Wis. And John Thompson, and Dalton, Wisc. Mr. Thompson was one of our most prominent and highly respected citizens. For almost 40 years he has been a member of the school board of his home district, always interested in keeping the educational system of the country up the highest standard. In the early days he was a member of the Board of Commissioners of Hand County, rendering valuable service to the county in his careful management of the public affairs. He endured the hardships and privations of the pioneers, but lived to enjoy the fruits of his labors. He was typical of the sturdy stock from which the pioneers came, and it is to him and his associates of those early days that we owe the present development of our county. In his death the family has lost a loving husband and father, and the community at large has lost a staunch and steadfast friend and supporter. His life should prove an inspiration to the younger generation. The funeral was held at the home on Thursday afternoon, Rev. O.E. Tell, of Parker, a former pastor at this point, preaching the sermon. The house was crowded to its utmost capacity by the friends and neighbors from far and near. The bier was completely covered by the floral pieces of various designs contributed by relatives, lodge and friends. At the cemetery the Masonic Lodge took charge of the service, carrying out their impressive ritualistic ceremony. Several relatives of both Mr. and Mrs. Thompson were in attendance. He married Caroline "Carrie" Pemelia Round on 1 January 1874 in Marquette County, Wisconsin. They had a daughter, Caroline "Carrie" (b. 1876) and the mother died shortly thereafter. Andrew then married Sara Bailey McDowell, daughter of George and Isabella (Bailey) McDowell. Andrew and Sara had four known children: Alice Isabella (b 1888), David Andrew (b. 1890), Howard Earl (1895-1964), and Frank Merle (1897- 1957).
