On August 12, 1862, at North Buena Vista, Andrew was enrolled by McGregor postmaster Willard Benton in Company G of the 21s Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was mustered into service on September 9, 1862, at Dubuque. On September 16, 1862, on board the "Henry Clay" and two barges tied alongside, they started down the Mississippi. They spent one night on Rock Island, continued their trip the next day, debarked at Montrose due to low water, traveled by train to Keokuk, boarded the "Hawkeye State" and continued to St. Louis. The first seven months of their service was spent in Missouri. During the Vicksburg Campaign, Andrew did not participate in the May 1, 1863, Battle of Port Gibson and neither he nor his regiment participated in the May 16, 1863, Battle of Champion Hill (although one man accidentally wounded himself on the day of the battle), but on May 17, 1863, with the 23d Iowa, they assaulted Confederates entrenched along the east side of the Big Black River. The 21st's colonel, Sam Merrill, was seriously wounded while leading the assault and Andrew Wick was shot in the left thigh. Although a through-and-through wound, it splintered his femur and he was sent to Benton Barracks to recuperate. He was then transferred to the Invalid Corps (later Veteran Reserve Corps) and was discharged on July 5, 1865, at Burnside Barracks, Indianapolis. In addition to Jake, Andrew said he and Nancy had six other children: Sarah Adeline born on August 22, 1866, Rosanna "Rose" born on May 2, 1868, George Andrew on February 22, 1870 (although he erroneously said 1890), Jonathan "John" on September 6, 1872, James Calvin on April 19, 1874, and Joseph Allen on May 27, 1881. Andrew first applied for an invalid pension on February 19, 1866, while living in North Buena Vista, but by 1877 was living in Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, when he applied for an increase with a supportive affidavit from a local doctor who said Andrew's injured leg was now in a "semi paralytic condition" and two inches less in circumference than his healthy leg. The family remained in Memphis, Missouri, for several years but then returned to North Buena Vista. On October 12, 1900, Andrew and Jake went fishing on the Mississippi River. While hauling in their nets, the boat took on water, swamped and capsized. Jake made it to shore, but Andrew with an atrophied leg was unable to swim and drowned. Nancy applied for an invalid pension and her application was still pending on June 5, 1901, when the Elkader Argus reported "the body of Andrew Wick, the old soldier who was drowned near Buena Vista Oct. 12th, was discovered Friday. Thought eight months had passed the remains though badly decomposed were still recognizable." The Guttenberg Press reported that the remains had been found by Andrew's son-in-law who, while rowing on the river, "noticed the body of a man in the bushes." Affidavits from Jake who was with his father, E.P. Sawyer who witnessed the drowning from shore and Nancy, together with three newspaper articles all substantiate the October 12th date of death.
