A fine gentleman, he is a good neighbor and a most creditable citizen. Angier A. Heath, the subject of this weeks' sketch was born in Randolph, July 28, 1853 the son of Samuel and Roxy (Mann) Heath. He was the fifth child of three boys and three girls. The Heath family moved to Gorham and it was in the district schools of Gorham that Angier received his primary education. An ambitious fellow, he went to Lancaster and secured a job working in the hardware store of Rowell & Rhodes, thus paying his way through Lancaster Academy. After his schooling was finished he went to Rockport, Massachusetts and there he learned the stone mason trade. Fond of the mountains, he left the seashore and returned to Gorham where he joined his parents and brothers and sisters. His father was a fine stone mason and the young man, Angier, followed in Samuel Heath's footsteps. He took a leading part in the activities of the town and among the many stone mason jobs that he did was the stone work on the Union Congregation Church which is located on Gorham Hill. He was one of the leaders in the movement for the erection of the church and was one of its loyal supporters. While a resident of Gorham he was selectman of the town for two years and served on the school board for six years. Through the influence of relatives in Boston Mr. Heath was persuaded to leave Gorham and go to work on the George Mann farm in New Hampton. This farm was owned by George Mann who was manager of the Quincy House, a well-known hotel in Boston and the farm was used to raise hogs and vegetables for the consumption of the Quincy House guests. Mr Heath came to New Hampton in 1894 to take charge of the raising of hogs of which there were about seven hundred and he managed the farm in the usual fine way he did everything else. Following the death of George Mann ten years later, Mr. Heath left the Farm and bought the so-called Dave Shaw place on the Ashland – New Hampton Road where he now makes his home. This place contains 60 acres of woodland and pasture, and the house originally was a small cottage farm house. Mr. Heath, since buying the house has rebuilt it and it is well known to all residents of this section for its stone pillars and posts. It is now a large two and one-half story building and is one of the finest dwelling houses around. Since leaving the employ of George Mann thirty years ago, Mr. Heath has resumed his stone masonry work and for the past thirty years he has given the best of himself in this field. His workmanship is of the highest grade and his services have been in constant demand. He has had steady employment doing stone masonry work in on summer dwellings around Newfound and Squam Lakes. He specializes in building fireplaces and all the stone work at David Austin's Waterville Inn was done by Mr Heath. His skills in this field is unquestioned and up to the time he retired from active labor a year ago, his superiors were none and his equals few. February 16, 1886 he was married to Miss. Mina Harriman of Jackson and they are the parents of two sons, Lawrence, of New Britain, Connecticut and George L., Postmaster of Holderness. There are five grandchildren. Mrs. Heath died February 26, 1913 and since that time Mr. Heath has been living alone for the most part. Up to a few months ago Mr. Heath has never had a sick day in his life, but at the present time his poor health has necessitated Mr. and Mrs. George Heath and family of Holderness coming to Ashland to live with him. Mr. Heath is a member of the Glenn Lodge I.O.O.F. of Gorham of Mt. Prospect Masonic Lodge of Ashland and of the Order of Eastern Star. Well Known Resident Dies. Angier A. Heath died Monday afternoon at his home just over the line in New Hampton, on the Ashland-New Hampton highway. He had been ill for about a year, but not seriously until within a few days of his death. He was on the streets of Ashland about a week before his death and met many of his friends. For a man 81 years old he was remarkably active. He had a jovial nature and was a loyal neighbor and friend. He will be sadly missed by his host of friends and acquaintances. He had been a member of the Glen Lodge, I.O.O.F. of Gorham and of Mt. Prospect Masonic Lodge of Ashland and of the Order of Eastern Star. Angier A. Heath was born in Randolph, Vt. July 28, 1883. In 1886 he married Miss Mina Harriman of Jackson who died in 1913. Mr. Heath is survived by two sons, Lawrence, of New Britain, Conn. and George L. Postmaster of Holderness, besides five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Thursday afternoon with Reverend John A Chapin as officiating clergyman. The members of Mt. Prospect Lodge A.F. & A.M. attended the funeral in a body and performed their rites both at the church and at the Green Grove Cemetery where interment took place. >The Ashland Citizen, September 29, 1934, p11.
