Clothing Caught Fire in Most Remarkable Manner A dispatch from Sand Coulee tells of a distressing accident which befell Mrs. Charles Lefley while riding toward her home from town with Richard Oliver. She carried in her arms her baby eight months old. Mr. Oliver had bought a caddy of matches before starting and and placed them in a bucket under the seat where Mrs. Lefley sat. In the bucket were some iron tools and it is supposed the matches caught fire through friction. Just after starting for home Mrs. Lefley remarked that she believed something was burning, and handing her baby to Mr. Oliver rose up and in an instant was enveloped in flames. The terrified woman sprang from the wagon and began rolling towards a water ditch by the roadside, screaming in agony. A man who happened to be passing with a couple buckets of water dashed them upon her and with some difficulty the flames were extinguished, but not before the woman was terribly burned from the waist downward. Luckily none of the flames reached her lungs, and while it is possible she may recover, it is hardly probable. While a physician was being brought from Stockett, a couple miles away, the woman suffered indescribable tortures and was covered with oil by the neighbors in their efforts to allay her agony. When the physician arrived she was unconscious. Everything possible was done for her at once, and she is resting easier, though if by any possibility she should recover, it will be a matter of many months. Butte Inter Mountain (MT), 31 July 1901 Fatally Burned By Matches Great Falls, July 31--Mrs. Charles Lefley, living near Sand Coulee, was fatally burned while driving home from town. A box of matches she was carrying became ignited and set fire to her clothing.
