OBITUARY: Obituary of Mrs. Ann P. Zigler. ---- April 15th, 1807, Ann P. Kerr was born in Allegheny county, Pa., where Emlington now stands. The youngest of a family of nine children she remained with her mother until the time of her marriage to Jacob Zigler, Feb. 1, 1827. Her mother became a widow when Ann was three weeks old, her father, a ship builder, having been accidentally drowned at that time and not found until 20 days later. After a life of 27 years of farming in Mercer county, Pa., they moved with seven children to a farm in Wayne township, Jones county, Iowa, where they dwelt until they moved to Monticello, Iowa, about the year 1872, to live a retired life until her last moments. She endured the burdens and enjoyed the pleasures (?) of pioneer life in the west, also well knowing what it meant to be a soldier's wife until her husband became sick and was discharged. He died in Monticello Dec. 25, 1885, having been taken suddenly ill the preceding Thanksgiving, and was buried by the G. A. R. of Anamosa. After his death, Mrs. Zigler made her home with her children and grand children, and after "waiting, I know not why," as she would say, death finally came to her at the extreme age of 87 years. She has been almost blind for at least two years, but could see to write two large notes May 2d. A letter from Mrs. Mina Barnes, of Oakdale, Neb., briefly explains: "DEAR BROTHER, SISTER AND FAMILY -- I have a hard task to do and that is to write you that mother is dead. She died May 10th at 11 o'clock, from the bursting of a blood vessel in the brain. She had two bad spells before and said the third would take her. She was in as good health as usual that morning and was sitting piecing a quilt, her favorite pastime, when I took suddenly sick and called her in. She helped me to bed and the baby guided her to the top of the hill where Albert could see her wave to him, about five rods from the house. As she came back, within three rods of the house she fell moaning to the ground and expired. I did not see her until they carried her away I am in bed not able to sit up. I almost died before help came. Am better now. Your sister MINA BARNES." This aged lady leaves three children in Oregon, two in Nebraska, one in Missouri, one in Kansas and one in Iowa, Mrs. Wm. Armitage, of Anamosa, to mourn the loss of a mother. She has 33 grandchildren and the great-grandchildren have many times listened to "grandma's" song. In her youth she became a christian, and soon united with the Presbyterian church, but when she came to Iowa this denomination had no services where she could attend. She then joined the United Brethren of Langworthy. So far as she was able she was found assisting in any good work and caring for the afflicted.
