Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock this morning (Thursday) for Mrs. Rebecca Anne Mitchell, pioneer of this section, who passed away last Sunday at the age of 83, lacing only a few days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. J. Dehlinger at Buffalo. Rev. Harry Blunt, pastor of the Belle Fourche Congregational church, will conduct the services. Active pall bearers are Arthur Somervold, Arthur Bach, Thomas Eaton, John Widdoss, Elmer Richards, Boda Wamsley. Honorary pall bearers are Sam Mortimer, Dr. L. J. Townsend, Thomas Gay, Sr., Frank Gayden, James Smith, W. H. Lancaster, E. M. Sly, James Newland and W. R. Arnold. Interment in the Minnesela cemetery. The passing of Mrs. Mitchell removes from our midst another of these hardy pioneers who courageously cam to Western South Dakota in those days when settlers were few and far between and danger from Indians was not unknown. When modern conveniences as we know them now were not thought of, when crude dwellings were erected for warmth and shelter, water was carried from a well, spring or stream, wood cut and carried in for fuel, markets often far away and food necessarily hauled some distance and in quantity. She lived the life of the pioneer, did her part in her own home and helped neighbors when needed. Rebecca Ann Stevens was born at Whitby, Ontario, Canada, March 12, 1860. She was of Scotch-Irish parentage. She grew to womanhood and obtained her education in Owens Sound, Ontario. Her father was a ship's carpenter at Georgian Bay, Lake Erie. She took up nursing as her occupation and worked in a Sanatorium at Danville, N. Y., then in Los Angeles, Calif., from 1883 to 1887. In 1883 he mother, Mrs. Catherine Stevens, came from Owen Sound to the Black Hills, joining her sons, Harry Stevens, who had come in 1876, and Tom Stevens, who came in '79 and settled at Crook City. The Stevens family moved to Minnesela, which became a thriving little village, the first town in Butte county and county seat. Harry Stevens was the first sheriff of Butte county and Wm. Mitchell the first deputy, 1883 to 1889. Mr. Mitchell had settled at the mouth of False Bottom in the spring of 1879, and in 1883 he moved to Minnesela where he established a general mercantile store. And in 1887 Revecca Stevens arrived in the little frontier town to visit her mother and brothers. It was during the winter of that first year, in January, that Miss Stevens and her mother started to walk from what is now the Somervold ranch, which Robert Stevens owned at the time and to which the women had gone to assist in some interior work in the house, back to Minnesela and were caught in a raging blizzard. One of those storms which must be experienced out in the open to be realized; in which the direction cannot be gauged by the wind for it swirls about seemingly from all directions, visibility extends only a few feet, fine snow blinds the eyes and takes the breath. Finally the two reached a shack no the edge of the Crooked Oak country and took shelter there where they were found by the searching party which came to look for them, after they had spent most of the night waling in a circle as their tracks showed. On July 17, 1888, Miss Stevens was united in marriage with Wm. Mitchell. Eight children, four sons and four daughters, were born to the union, the oldest son passing away in infancy. Mr. Mitchell continued to operate the general merchandise store and Mrs. Mitchell looked after the comfort of her family and also took her place in the activities of the town. Her knowledge of nursing was a boon to the community in those days of distances and slow transportation, for whenever there was illness she was called--and never refused. She acted as midwife in the community until the doctor came, if he came at all. Here duties in the home an community were multitudinous, but she met the all efficiently and pleasantly. After the railroad came and passed Minnesela by, locating the town at Belle Fourche, Mr. Mitchell purchased the Choteau ranch on which the town was located and began farming and raising vegetables and fruit, really pioneering in the latter as little fruit was grown in the country at that time. Mr. Mitchell passed away February 24, 1936 and since that time Mrs. Mitchell has made her home in Buffalo with her daughter.Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her children: H. R. Mitchell, residing on the home farm; Kathryn Kampa, Adrain, Mich.; Agnes Dehlinger, Buffalo; Clyde A. Mitchell, Lead; Margaret McMahon, Buffalo; Victoria Corum, Seattle, Wash.; George Mitchell, Adrain, Mich. Eight grandchildren, two of whom are serving in the United States army; four great grandchildren. One sister, Agnes McLeod, Langley Prairie, British Columbia, and her brother, Harry, now of Seattle, Wash. Deceased was a member of the Black Hills Pioneer Society,of the Congregational church of Belle Fourche, and of Laminson Post Auxiliary Unit, American Legion, Buffalo. Her mother, Mrs. Catherine Stevens, will be remembered as Butte county's oldest citizen, having passed away at the age of 106 years and seven months.
