In contemplating the happy condition which surround us, the facilities for intercourse, the readily obtained luxuries of life, and the general evidences of the highest civilization being attained it is difficult to believe that it is within human memory when the scene of our present activities was untrodden save by the stealthy foot of the savage, that one who has listened to the weird ring of the wolf's cry in the unbroken forest, has lived to hear the hum of the reaper and see the wilderness transformed to a vineyard. The one such, who formed the link connecting to-day with the age when the Indian reigned supreme, has passed to her long rest in the person of Mrs. Wm. Silk, who died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. George Broderick, Redickville, last Monday, after reaching the truly remarkable age of nearly 99 years. It is more (sic) thas sixty years since Wm. Silk, with his wife and family, came by ox-team from Hamilton to Melancthon, where Mr. Silk had engaged to work for Louis Horning, the first settler in Melancthon. The trip took five days . They settled on the east half of Lot 8 in Con. 2, O.S., and proceeded to hew out a home for themselves. Their children, John (deceased) and Mary (who is now Mrs. Broderick), were the first white children born in Melancthon. The story of their labors and triumphs is much the same as that of all pioneers. The hardships they endured lent them courage to face fresh difficulties, and, before death divided the brave couple in 1878, their modest beginnings had grown to an estate of more than 700 acres. Mrs. Silk was born on May 27, 1800, and until a short time ago enjoyed good mental and physical health. Of her family there still survive: Jos. Silk, of Muskoka; Henry Silk, Shelburne; Jacob and Wm. Silk, Melancthon; Mrs. Broderick, Mrs. Slack, Mrs. S. Hudd, and Mrs. Geo. Redickville, Melancthon. Her grandchildren and great-grand children combine to make up a total of nearly 200 descendants. The interment took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon at the old Spring Valley burying ground, Horning's Mills. Shelburne Free Press - March 16, 1899 pg 1 col 1
