Read More	DEATH of JACOB SILK, SR.: Another of the old and esteemed pioneers of Melancthon passed away on Sunday last in the person of Jacob Silk, of the west half lot 5, con. 3, D.S., Melancthon. The late Jacob Silk came of pioneer stock, his father being one of the earliest pioneers in the forties. Deceased was born in Hamilton and when a mere child his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Silk, moved with the Horning and Bares families to what is now Hornings Mills. Mr. and Mrs. Silk settled on the east half lot 8, con. 2, Melancthon,and lived there until his death. The farm is now owned by Mrs. Shields. Their nearest market at that time was Hamilton or Toronto. Either place was reached by a road that led through Mono Mills as the county town of Dufferin, Orangeville, was not in existence. It required two weeks to make the round trip to Hamilton or Toronto. For nearly 15 years Mono Mills was their nearest post office. It cost 25 cents at that time to send a letter to England. Deceased was married on October 7th, 1856, to Miss Susannah Slack and they settled on the homestead where he died. The late Jacob Silk and his brothers, while working at home, brought the first threshing machine into Melancthon township in the year 1853 and used it during many years threshing for the early settlers. The first white male child born in Melancthon township was the late John Silk of Redickville and the first female child was Mary Silk, now Mrs. Geo. Broderick of Hornings Mills, brother and sister of the deceased gentleman. Mr. Silk had been ill for the past year and a half and was confined to his room a greater part of the time. The cause of death was paralysis and a general break up of the system. The deceased during his life time was one of the most highly esteemed men in the community and his death will be regretted by a host of relatives and old friends. He is survived by his aged partner, four sons, Wm. H. Silk, Corbetton; Jacob Silk, Jr., Melancthon, and Thos. Silk and Richard Silk, at home, and an adopted daughter, Miss Alice Silk. Wm Silk of the 2nd line, Melancthon, is a brother and Mrs. Geo. Broderick of Hornings Mills; Mrs. Stephen Hudd, Masonville; Mrs. Richard Slack and Mrs. Geo. A. Reddick of Toronto are sisters. Services were conducted at the home at 1:30 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon and interment took place later at the Gravel Road cemetery.
