Heroic Treatment for Appendicitis Failed to Avail More Than Short Delay of the Dreaded Result. Was One of Chico’s Noble Women, Whose Death Will Be Keenly Felt By a Multitude of Friends. All that human hands could do to save the life of Mrs. Annie Edwards, whose serious illness had been known for a period of but a few days, has been done and the fight for a life that was precious to almost this whole community has been lost. Early last evening all reasonable hope was abandoned, for blood poisoning had set in and taken possession of her entire system. The physicians could only say that death must occur and within a few hours at most. She passed away at 12:30 this morning. Deceased was born in Waterloo, Ill., July 27, 1866, and came to Chico in 1876, where she grew to womanhood and was married to J.D. Edwards, who died six years ago. Mrs. Edwards was the daughter of Mrs. J. Neubarth, and a sister of A.L., John G., Rudolph and Adolph Neubarth, all of whom are prominent young businessmen of Chico. She also leaves a daughter, Josephine, eleven years of age. Having resided in Chico from childhood to womanhood, and being possessed of such a disposition and character that each new acquaintance was esteemed a friend and likewise held her to be the same, Annie Edwards’ circle of admiring friends was only limited to the circle of her acquaintanceship. At all time bright and cheerful, with kind words for all of whom she had occasion to speak, and never a harsh word for those of whom criticism could have been truthfully made, absolutely pure in character and thought, the loving companion of and a constant source of comfort to her aged mother, a true sister and mother, it is not surprising that during her critical illness, numerous anxious inquiries from people of all classes have been made as to her condition almost hourly. Mrs. Edwards had been ill for several weeks and had been under the care of local physicians, but not until the early part of last week did it become a certainly that she was suffering from appendicitis. No time was lost in securing Dr. White of Sacramento to perform, with the assistance of Drs. Stansbury and Gatchell, the serious operation which was recognized as absolutely necessary to save her life. This operation was performed last Wednesday. Though the internal condition of the patient was found to be extremely serious, and much worse than they expected, there was still hope that she might recover. An nurse, who has had a vast experience in such cases was secured and every favorable condition possible to be accorded, was provided. After the operation, the patient rallied quite satisfactorily, and Thursday and Friday there was reason for a strengthening hope, but Saturday there was a change, and Saturday night there were moments so critical that death seemed close at hand. Dr. Gatchell remained at the bedside throughout the night. Yesterday morning the patient seemed slightly stronger and there was a hope that this was an indication for the better, but during the day her condition changed for the worse, and last night it became apparent that she was beyond the aid of human assistance, and death was but a matter of a short time. ~~~ Chico Daily Record, Tuesday Morning, May 13, 1902, pg 1, col 2: Mrs. Edwards’ Funeral. The funeral of Mrs. Annie Edwards will take place this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family residence on Broadway between Second and Third. Deceased was a member of Josephine Chapter No. 104 and of Silver Oak Circle No. 203, W. of W., of which the members of both lodges will attend in a body. ~~~ Chico Daily Record, Wednesday Morning, May 14, 1902, pg 1, col 1: Chico Business Ceased for Mrs. Edwards’ Funeral. Large Gathering of People From All Classes Were Out to Manifest Their Respect to Her Memory. Rev. Seneca Jones Delivered a Truthful Eulogy, After Which the Eastern Star holds Impressive Service. The exceptionally large attendance at the funeral of Mrs. Annie Edwards, which took place yesterday afternoon from the family home on Broadway, was a befitting testimonial of the high esteem in which she was held by the people generally in Chico. The home was crowded with friends, and many times the number of those within, stood in silence on the sidewalks during the service. Floral pieces in great number and beauty had been offered by admiring friends. Members of Josephine Chapter, 104, O.E.S., and of the local Lodge of Women of Woodcraft attended in a body and marched to the grave. For the hour of the funeral, all business sin town was suspended, for Annie Edwards had been known and admired by the families of every businessman in town. Rev. Seneca Jones conducted the services at the home, and delivered a brief sermon, in the course of which he reviewed in a manner impressive to all within range of his voice, some of the characteristics of the departed one, which had won for her such general respect. In closing he offered words of consolation to the bereaved. Appropriate music was rendered by a quartette comprised of Misses Lennon and McCargar, and Messrs H.H. Camper and J.L. Barnes, Miss Ida Dougherty acting as organist. Josephine Chapter of Eastern Star took charge of the remains at the close of the services at the home, and the ritualistic service was held at the grave. The funeral cortege was comprised of sixty carriages. The pall bearers were J.W. Roper, A.G. Simpson, H.W. Miller, E. Meybem, A.G. Eames, and T.L. Bohlender. ~~~ 35-year-old Anna Neubarth Edwards was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on May 13, 1902.
