Despondent Woman Takes Her Own Life Seward Newspaper June 3, 1926 Miss Anna Hillman committed suicide by hanging Tuesday, being found about 7 o'clock Miss Anna Hillmann, aged 47 years who had been employed by Miss Gay Palmer at her home for some time past, committed suicide Tuesday afternoon by hanging herself in the basement of the Palmer home. The body was found shortly before 7 o'clock in the evening. Miss Palmer had left home about 3 o'clock in the afternoon to visit a friend. About 3:30 the mail man called at the home to make the afternoon delivery and this was taken into the house by Miss Hillmann. About 5 o'clock Mrs. Oscar Kroeger, a sister of the deceased, called the Palmer home several times over the phone but received no response. At 7:35 Miss Palmer returned and finding a letter from her sister on the table sat down and read it. Finishing the letter she went to the kitchen to see if Miss Hillmann had supper underway, but found everything as it had been left earlier in the day. She then went to the stairway and called upstairs, but received no response, Finally she went to the basement, and there the body was found suspended from the ceiling by a rope, which she cut, permitting the body to fall to the floor. Dr. B. E. Morrow stated however, that death had taken place before his arrival. County Attorney McKillip was called but decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Miss Palmer is convinced that Miss Hillmann had made a couple of other attempts to take her own life. At noon she observed a red streak around her neck and asked the cause, but the reply was in a manner that nothing further was said about it. The day before Miss Palmer noticed a cut on Miss Hillmann's wrist, and had asked the cause for it, to which she replied that the butcher knife had slipped. Miss Palmer paid no further attention to that, either, little thinking at the time that the unfortunate woman had in mind the destruction of her own life. A recent attack of the flu and worry over some financial matters are believed to have been the cause of the rash act. Miss Hillmann was born at Burlington, Wisconsin and her parents are buried there. Besides her sister, Mrs. Kroeger of Seward, she has a brother, Fred Hillmann, who lives now at Kansasville, Wis. He formerly conducted the filling station just north of Utica, on the S.Y. A. highway but at present is ill and in a Wisconsin hospital. The remains of the unfortunate woman were taken to Chain's undertaking rooms, and the funeral will be held a 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C.H. Becker, pastor of St. John's Lutheran church, at the chapel. Interment will be made in the Seward cemetery.
