Anna attained the age of 89 years and 26 days. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. Among the well-known residents associated frequently in the annals of progress here are Mr. and Mrs. Nanno Smith. This elderly couple lived to observe their 57th wedding anniversary before their subsequent deaths. They were residents here for more than half a century. These pioneers moved to Lennox in 1881, leaving their farming enterprise near Ackley, Grundy County, IA. Here Mr. Smith entered the general merchandising business, opening a store where the Schmidt building—two doors north of Courey's Store—now stands. Here he conducted his business until 1900 when he moved his stock into the fine new two-story structure he had erected, now occupied by Bailin's store. He continued this business until 1910 when he sold it to Ettledorf & Kass. Following his retirement he later served several years as county commissioner from district three and served on the local board of education. Mr. Smth was born at Weener, Germany, February 10, 1850. He grew to young manhood and was educated n the German schools and upon finishing his schoolwork became a sailor. He began work as a cabin boy, and sailed between Germany and South America mostly. At that time it took two years for the round trip. He remained with these duties for six years, and in 1871 came to the United States—when he was 21—alone, settling first at Freeport, IL. In 1872 he moved to Ackley, IA., where he farmed for nine years, marrying in 1873 at Ackley. In the latter 1870's news had reached Iowa residents that the C. M. St. P. & P. railroad had extended their line as far as Dakota Territory. Mr. Smith's brother, W. B. Smith, then went to the Lennox vicinity, where he viewed the possibilities of business opportunities here, and after starting a hardware store, sent for his brother (Nanno) to come and establish a grocery store, that being his business in Iowa. That year, in 1881, Mr. Smith loaded his small stock of grocery merchandise and household goods, and started for the new settlement by freight. Mrs. Smith and the children were to follow in a few days by passenger. Unknown by either the bridge at Canton had been washed out, so Mr. Smith forded the river— below Rock Valley—and the goods were brought to Lennox by team. This necessitated many trips. Mrs. Smith reached Mason City, and returned to Ackley where she remained for six weeks, while the bridge was repaired. During the long winter previous, the supply of provisions at Lennox was rather low, and the delay created by the wash-out, resulted in Mr. Smith's stock being received at a very opportune time. The groceries were dealt in small quantities. In those days farmers walked to town with a few eggs and a small pat of butter in exchange for a few groceries. A little rock candy and tobacco were purchased providing a few cents remained after the necessary articles had been bought. Mrs. Smith, nee Anna Frerichs, was born in Leer, Ostfriesland, Germany, July 4, 1848. There she grew to womanhood, and at 16, inspired by the tales of a "free country here," came to the United States, alone, locating at Freeport, IL. There she remained for a few years, and then moved to Ackley, IA., where she later married. Eight children were born to this union, five of whom preceded their father in death. The eight children read as follows: Simon, Kate, Frank, Joe and another son, all of whom have passed away, and Mrs. Ella Raker, Otto and Ben Smith, present survivors. Mr. Smith in his later years also became prominently associated with the State Bank here. He died July 5, 1930 at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 25 days. Mrs. Smith passed away August 30, 1937 at the age of 89 years, 26 days.
