Description	:	Anna K. Smetana was born in Chicago, Ill., June 19, 1881. She died in Verdigre, August 28, 1947 at the age of 66 years, 1 month and 18 days. She was baptized July 10, 1881 at the St. Joannis Nep. Church in Chicago. She came to Knox county at the age of 13 years with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Smetana. The family homesteaded seven miles west of Verdigre. There she grew to womanhood. At the age of 17, she was united in marriage to Joseph Ruzicka of Pischelville, January 25, 1897. She came to Knox county at the age of 13 years with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Smetana. The family homesteaded seven miles west of Verdigre. There she grew to womanhood. At the age of 17, she was united in marriage to Joseph Ruzicka of Pischelville, January 25, 1897. The couple lived almost 50 years of happy married life. Mr. and Mrs. Ruzicka farmed and toiled with the joys and sorrows until they were no longer able to keep up their labors. Then, they moved into Verdigre about 22 years ago. In town, Mrs. Ruzicka still kept up with the duties of her home and many other duties, which she always did willingly, for her children, friends, neighbors and relatives. She kept up this activity until her health began to fail. The final summons was answered August 28 at 6:30 a.m. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband; six daughters and one son; Lucy Hrbek of Monowi, Tillie Novacek and Mary Knori of Verdigre, Ann Wilder of LaCrosse, Wis., Sylvia Cihlar of Redbird, Bess Hamlin of Kalamazoo, Mich and Joe of Panama, Canal Zone. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; one sister, Kate Kosmicke of Martin, S.D. and a host of other relatives, friends and neighbors. One grandson, Ernest Hrbek, gave his life for his county in WWII. Also preceding her in death were two infant children and a son, Adolph, who died in 1920 and a daughter, Ella Jacot, who died in 1936. ...The Verdigre Eagle 4 Sept 1947 (Thanks goes to Gayle Neuhaus for this obituary!)
