Description	:	Rose Smetana, nee Divoka, was born in Tresbon, Bohemia, March 26, 1848, where she spent her girlhood days. At the age of 23, she answered the call of the wanderlust and left the scenes of her childhood and came to the United States, where her sister, Mrs. Vrchota, had preceded her. Read More	Rose Smetana, nee Divoka, was born in Tresbon, Bohemia, March 26, 1848, where she spent her girlhood days. At the age of 23, she answered the call of the wanderlust and left the scenes of her childhood and came to the United States, where her sister, Mrs. Vrchota, had preceded her. In September 1872, she entered the holy bonds of matrimony with Frant Smetana. The city of Chicago was the scene of their happiness for five years. In 1877 this couple left behind the great metropolis of the middlewest to humbly till the soil on a farm near Waterloo, Iowa, where they remained for a period of three years. In 1880, they pushed further on into the wilderness of the great west and became pioneers of Tyndall, So. Dak. Two years of hardships, labor and of happiness were spent upon these western plains, when the call of civilization took them back to Chicago to the scenes of happy days, when love was young and hardships meant so little. For six years they lived together in this city, sharing the comforts, sorrows and happiness of life, when once more at the beckon of the great western plains in 1886, they moved to Knox county, Nebraska, settling on a farm seven miles northwest of Verdigre, where they tilled the soil and established a home. On June 29, 1895, the husband died, leaving the wife and mother to shoulder the burden and to carry on. On April 5, 1927 at 10:20 a.m. at the age of 79 years, she died in her home at Verdigre, Nebraska. From this union there were seven children, four having preceded the mother, leaving to mourn her departure, three daughters, all respected residents of our community; Mary K. Brun, Anna Ruzicka and Katherine Kosmicke, also twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, May 7th at the ZCBJ Hall. Rev B.A. Filipi of Clarkson and Mr. W.J. Svoboda delivered the sermons. Burial was made Sunday afternoon in the Jelen cemetery west of Verdigre.
