The above very brief biographical sketch, which is all that this paper has been able to secure is altogether too brief a summing up of the life record of so good a mother as Mrs. Black. During the little more than a score of years of her womanhood the manifold duties of this mother of ten children were well performed and it was indeed farthest from her wish and farthest from that of her family and friends that the grim reaper should overtake her while comparatively young and her splendid work unfinished. Humanity is shocked beyond measure when called upon to follow to the grave friends whom it would seem were fairly entitle to a longer lease of life; those nearest and dearest to the departed one ask the eternal question "why?" But it seems in accordance with the Divine plan of creation that it is "Ours not to reason why – but ours to do and die". Mrs. Black was faithful to the duties of life until the end. To the husband; to the sons and daughter, and to all who are bowed down by this untoward blow, the community extends such sympathy and consolation as its possible in this hour. Funeral services were conducted from the Church of Christ of Friday at 2pm by her pastor, P.A. Millard. A large congregation of relatives and friends was in attendance and a sadder or more profoundly respectful gathering has seldom been brought together. The remains of this good wife and mother were tenderly laid to rest in the Scranton Cemetery. Transcribed from Scranton Journal Feb 1915
