''''''''''''''''''''''' Columbus Telegram, March 29, 1900, p. 5, col. 4 Mrs. Mary Bergold filed a complaint against her husband, Charles Bergold, Tuesday morning, in Judge Hudson’s court, charging him with threatening to kill and asking that he be placed under bonds to keep the peace. In the afternoon the family appeared in court and finally compromised matters by Bergold promising to leave town within twenty-four hours. ''''''''''''''''''''''' The Columbus Telegram, February 28, 1902, p. 1, col. 6 Charles Bergold, who resides in the east part of town, was declared insane yesterday by the county board of insanity. The relatives here have made application for his custody, and the commissioners have taken the request under advisement. For several years Charles has been investing his earnings in Colorado gold mine stocks. He believes he has found a veritable hill of gold, and he also believes that all kinds of thieves are trying to steal his property. He thinks he is attended by a bodyguard of United States marshals. Last Monday night he made the startling discovery that his bodyguard had deserted him. He reported his troubles to the police and asked for protection. He carried a heavy club, and genuine fear showed in every line of his face. Fearing he might injure himself or others the police took charge of him. When not discussing gold mines Bergold appears rational. His wife says he seldom leaves home, and that this is the first time he has caused trouble. She is confident she can take proper care of her husband if the board shall commit him to her custody.
