Schatz, died at her home, in Monticello, Wednesday afternoon, September 18, at the age of 57 years, 9 months and 13 days. Mrs. Schatz's death came very suddenly after she became aware of the fact that she had become afflicted with an incurable trouble. Death was caused by diabetes and other complications, but their evidences had not been very strong, and while she was ailing, she did not consider that is was necessary to consult a physician until the Thursday before her death. She was up and about until the Monday morning previous to her death, when she took to her bed. Shortly afterwards she lapsed into an unconscious condition and remained thus until death. Mrs. Schatz was the second eldest of the eight children of Mr. and Mrs. Harm Harms. she was born in Beth alto, Madison County, Illinois. January 5, 1861, and five years later was brought by her parents to Wayne township, Jones county, Iowa, where she attended school, and was confirmed in the faith of the Lutheran church. She was married to Carl a. Schatz, January 21, 1886. They resided in Lovell township for a period of thirty years, until their retirement from the farm to Monticello, in January, 1916. She was the mother of eight children, the youngest of whom is dead. The survivors are August Schatz, Mrs. Adolph Egger, Mrs. Wilke Behrends, Harm Schatz, Carl Schatz Jr., and Anna and Elisa Schatz. She is also survived by three brothers, Herman, Gerd and John Harms, and two sisters, Mrs. Adam Scheer and Mrs. Ibe Eiben, of the Ryan neighborhood. she is also survived by her husband and twelve grandchildren. The funeral services will be held Saturday, September 21, commencing at 1 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 in the Lutheran church of Monticello. The services will be conducted by her pastor, Rev. s. Ide. Mrs. Schatz came of a good family, her father having been one of the active and well known citizens of the county, for a period of nearly fifty years. She was an excellent woman, whose domestic traits of character made her an ideal mother, whose thoughts and ambitions centered about the welfare of her children. With her loss they will begin to doubly realize the advantages they had in the example and teachings of so excellent a parent. The surviving husband and his children will have the profound sympathy of their friends.
