Description	:	In 1846, she was born in Tambach, Sachsische-Herzogtüme (Prussian Saxony, German Confederation) [now Tambach-Dietharz, Landkreis Gotha, Thüringen, Deutchland (Germany)]. Her birth name was Johanne Christine Friederike Bretmacher. Her German name was anglicized to Anna Rachel Bradour. The 1860 census lists her occupation as "Boatbuilder." At age 14, she would most likely have been working on the construction of canal boats at the Cumberland Basin of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, where child labor was employed to pound tar-soaked rope into the cracks between boards to waterproof the vessel. She married Nathaniel Rice (1850-1900) on February 13, 1876,... They lived on a farm on Bedford Road, and by 1900 they were operating a boarding house called the Berkeley House on Laing Avenue in South Cumberland. After her husband was killed in November 1900, she purchased or built a brick home at 318 Laing Avenue, where she died of gangrene in 1929. From 1908, she was an active member of Bethany United Brethren in Christ, Race & Fourth Streets. O B I T U A R Y — The funeral of Mrs. Anna R. Rice, 77, who died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. R. Bloss, 318 Laing avenue, will be held from the Bloss home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in the German Beneficial Cemetery.
