Friday, November 9, 1900, page 4. HORRIBLE ACCIDENT ON CHAPEL HILL Two Men Buried Beneath Tons of Shale Rock. One of the most tragic accidents that perhaps has ever taken place in South Cumberland took place this morning about nine o'clock on Arch street, near Sixth. A large number of men reported for duty this morning, among them Isaac Foreman and Nathaniel Rice. These two men were assigned by foreman Henry Martz to the same point on the Arch street ditch that they left last evening. The ditch at this particular point is between 12 and 14 feet deep and the material thrown out of it is a kind of soft clay and much harder to dig. Foreman and Rice were working in a space about 35 feet between powerful braces deep down below the surface. Foreman was using the pick and Rice the shovel. About nine o'clock Foreman noticed the earth above his head trembling and with a cry of terror ran ahead for a place of safety near the brace. He nearly reached the point when the side of the bank gave way and buried him and his companion beneath tons of the shale rock. The cave in took place between two braces and nearly filled the ditch. A workman nearby gave the alarm and Foreman Martz was soon on the spot. He remained outwardly cool but was naturally very much agitated. He speedily had the entire sewer force concentrated and a roll call taken. Foreman and Rice were the only two employees who failed to answer to their names. It was known, however, before that only these two men were at work where the accident happened. While this silent roll call was being made 20 men were in the ditch working like mad to rescue their unfortunate companions alive if possible and if dead with as little delay as possible. After about an hour's work Foreman's body was found in a stooping position and carried to an annex of Gangley's hotel on Laing avenue. The life was crushed out of him and death was instantaneous. An hour later the body of Rice was recovered in the deepest part of the ditch in a sitting position. He was terribly mangled and crushed almost beyond recognition. His body was taken to the Gangley annex. The Times correspondent on the hill was requested to telephone up town for the coroner and an extra lot policeman. The crowd around the ditch was so dense that the contractors feared other accidents might occur. Fully 1,000 persons surged around the pit and actually interfered with the workmen. Lieutenant Martz and patrolmen Wolf, O'Neal, and Shinholtz cleared the crowd away before the first body was taken out and an extra supply of blue coats was not needed. Street Superintendent Ousborn and City Councilman Jenvey, chairman of the street and alley committee, were soon on the scene and rendered valuable aid. As Coroner Ogle was out of town, Squire Gassman was appointed to act in his place and he summoned the following jury: James Rafter, foreman, and Messrs. Fred Rafter, Joseph Keller, Edward Connelly, Chas. Reichenbach, J.F. Dawson, James L. Martin, F. Screen, D.C. Viceroy, Louis Weber, W. L. Hartley, and D. M. Fellers. The jury after reviewing the remains adjourned to meet tomorrow afternoon at Squire Gassman's office, when all the witnesses can be present. Mr. Isaac Foreman, one of the victims, is 53 years of age and resides on Gay street. He leaves a wife and two children. Mr. Nathaniel Rice is about 55 years of age and lives in a part of the Berkeley house on Fifth street. He leaves a wife and three children. The bodies were moved to the morgue of the Cumberland Furniture & Coffin Co. this afternoon. The Evening Times. Cumberland, Maryland. Saturday, November 10, 1900, page 4. SEWER NOTES Not one man was at work on the new sewer today. Contractor Gannon paid a brief visit to the branch office of the Times on Virginia avenue today and while talking of the tragic accident of yesterday said: "All work has been stopped until those poor men are laid to rest forever." Tears rolled down his cheeks as he added "I never in all my life have been so much depressed. The death of those two men I can never forget." A lot of the employees said that they would not work in that Arch street ditch again for $5 per day. Inspector McLaughlin tried to instill some courage in the men yesterday afternoon by resuming work but first one and then another quit and went home. The employees will be paid for their work as usual this evening. The funeral of Nathaniel Rice will take place from Grace M.E. church Sunday. The funeral of Mr. Foreman will take place on Monday at two o'clock from the residence. THE VERDICT OF THE JURY The coroner's jury this afternoon at 4:10 o'clock rendered the following verdict in the case of Nathaniel Rice and Isaac Foreman: "We, the jury, find that they came to their death by being employed in a sewer on Arch street in South Cumberland, Maryland, on November 9, 1900, and according to the evidence of true witnesses we find that they came to their death by a fall of dirt and no one to blame." HILL HAPPENING TERSELY TOLD At the request of Inspector McLaughlin of the South Cumberland sewer a slight correction will be made in the Times concerning his trying to instill courage into the men to go to work on the afternoon of the cave in. Mr. McLaughlin was asking the men in question: "Are you working today?" The answer being "yes" he said: "Get down in the ditch and help put up these braces." The men cheerfully complied and went to work with a will. This was close on to the noon hour and while the bodies of the two unfortunate men were being taken out. This is the courage and the only courage that the gentlemanly inspector tried to instill into the men as he was as much shocked as the rest of the bosses and his only aim was to hasten the work of rescuing the bodies. The work on the sewer will commence again tomorrow morning. LAID TO REST The remains of Nathaniel Rice, who met such a tragic death in one of the ditches of the South Cumberland sewer last Friday morning, were laid to rest forever yesterday in the German Beneficial cemetery. The services were held in Grace M.E. church and were conducted by Rev. T.S. Long. He preached a most eloquent sermon from the text: "It is appointed unto man once to die," Hebrews 9:27. The church was packed and a large crowd stood outside, not being able to even obtain standing room. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers: Messrs. C.T. Steel, L.S. Bishop, Hayden Keech, John Schmidt, Conrad Meister, and Peter Brant. The funeral of Mr. Isaac Foreman took place from his late residence on Gay street this afternoon at two o'clock and was largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. Zimmerman of Kingsely church and the interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
