Last Sunday morning news reached Harlan announcing the death of Mrs. Peter Hein, by murder or suicide, at her home in section eleven of Cass Township. Deceased was found lying on her back between two trees north of the house absolutely nude, the body badly burned, probably from the use of kerosene. The grove where the body was found is a hundred yards from the house. Her husband left early Saturday morning to assist a neighbor with his threshing. He mentioned to his wife that if she got lonesome she should go over to the neighbor's, Mr. M. Neibauer, and visit until his return. The Neibauers say that she was not seen about the house all day Saturday, an incident that was a matter of much comment among the members of their family. It was 8:30 p.m. before Mr. Hein returned to the house. On the way be stopped at the home of Mr. Daeges about eight and accepted an invitation to eat supper with him. On arriving home he discovered his wife's absence and made a search for her. Failing to find her be sought the service, of Mr. Niebauer and his hired man, but this search was also unsuccessful. Mr. Hein slept at the home of the Niebauers Saturday night, thinking that his wife had gone to spend the day with her parents in Portsmouth. A horse had been left harnessed in the barn for her in case she should decide to do so. Next morning he got up at daylight to do the chores at his home and while at this work discovered Mrs. Hein in the grove as above stated. He at once informed his neighbors and the coroner was notified. No phoning was done Saturday night because neither family motioned had a phone. There was no sign of a struggle about the body when found, such as would be imagined in a death so painful as that from burning. Nor was there the slightest trace of ashes about the body, as might be expected to follow the destruction of the clothes worn by the woman if she committed the deed. These conditions led to hints of foul play, but the most careful medical examination failed to show signs of violence upon the body, and the evidences of death by strangulation were also absent. The family did not have a gasoline stove and there was no gasoline about the house. There was a jug of kerosene in the kitchen, but according to the testimony it was never used in lighting the fire only to fill the lamp. The living rooms were in good order and there was not the slightest indication of a struggle in or about the premises. If Mrs. Hein took her life the deed was done after five in the Evening. It was Mr. Hein's rule to tie the dog up at night, and a neighbor who passed at five p.m. noticed the dog loose in the yard. Mr. Hein states that the dog was tied on his return home. Deceased has been in poor health for some time. She was a woman of slender build, and to an intimate woman friend she had said that there were not many days more for her. That she had nothing to live for and didn't know why she was alive then, or words to that effect. The verdict of the coroner's jury was that she came to her death from causes to the jury unknown. Deceased was about twenty-eight. She was married February 10, 1897 to the husband who survives her, and leaves a son who had been sent to his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Schumaker on Friday. He was to return home with his parents from church at Portsmouth Sunday morning. The home life of Mr. and Mrs. Hein had been happy, the latter's ill health being their only cause of concern. Funeral services were held in the Catholic Church at Portsmouth conducted by Rev. Father Failenschmidt yesterday morning. PETER HEIN OF CASS ------------ FOUND SUNDAY MORNING Believed to be Suicide - Woman Was Despondent - Coroner's Jury Uncertain as to Manner of Death The body of Mrs. Peter Hein of Cass Township was found dead from burning, Sunday morning last. Coroner E. L. Oak was called at once to the home, about eight miles due west of Harlan. It was deemed necessary to investigate the cause of death of the young wife, whose body was found badly burned in a small maple grove about fifty yards north of the house, which is very close to the road. The substance of the facts as developed in the testimony before the coroner is as follows: On Saturday morning, the husband got ready to go to help a neighbor a few miles away thresh. He asked his wife if she would be lonesome, and she replied that she would not. Hein then told her that she might have the horse to go to town, if she wished, or she might go across the road to the neighbor's, Mr. Neibauer's, if she should get lonesome. Hein then went to work. He was detained until quite late, eating his supper at Mike Daeges' on his way home from the work of threshing. He ate his supper about half-past nine. He then reached home fifteen or twenty minutes later, and was unable to find his wife. After searching about the house a little, he went over to Mr. Neibauer's to inquire if she were there, but found out that she was not and that they had not seen her all day. Mr. Hein and his neighbor then went back to the Hein house, which is about 200 yards north of the Neibauer place, on the north side of the road, and renewed their search for the missing woman. They went into the house and found everything in perfect order, chairs all upright, and the dishes, etc., undisturbed. None of the woman's belongings were found about the house save a comb that she had worn in her hair, which was lying on a small table in the sitting room. On the table was found, also, a glass empty, with a small piece of lemon near it. Going from the house the men searched a part of the orchard and a berry thicket northwest of the house, and also the barns and outbuildings on the place. After walking about until midnight without finding the woman, Hein and his neighbor went to the latter's home and lay down, Hein, however, being unable to sleep. Hein said that he believed that his wife must have gone to her mother's, where they had left their seven-year old boy on Friday preceding. At about five o'clock Hein arose, and left the home of Neibauer, going over to his own premises, doing the chores and continuing the search. At about seven o'c1ock Hein returned to Neibauer's much disturbed, and told Neibauer that be believed that he had found her, but that he could not bear to go up to where the object was. Getting his hired man, Neibauer led the way and when about 25 yards from the place where the body was lying, Hein asked Neibauer if he could not see something, and Neibauer after stepping over to where Hein was standing, said be could. Neibauer then went up the place and saw at once that the body was that of Mrs. Hein. The clothing was burned off the body, the lower part of the body, both front and back burned, and the face badly burned, but the back of the neck and the back of the hands not burned. The burning was bad enough in and of itself to have caused death. Apparently the woman had not moved after first assuming the position in which she was found on the ground. The coroner and undertaker were both summoned at once, and a coroner's jury was called in, the latter not reaching any verdict until Monday noon, when the verdict returned was that the woman had died sometime between Saturday morning and Sunday morning; and by what means or by whom the jury did not know. Dr. Cobb, who was summoned by Coroner Cook, made a very careful examination of the body with Dr. Cook, the coroner. It was shown by this examination which was described in evidence given before the coroner's jury, that there were no marks of violence on the body, and that what had appeared to be contusions were only worse burns than elsewhere, the skin not having been broken by any bruises. There were no bones broken, and there was no evidence of strangulation. Dr. Cobb was of the opinion that the woman's clothing was on fire before she assumed the posture in which she was found, reasoning from the location of the burns. He testified that the burns were sufficient to cause death. So far as any evidence was adduced, and there was a good deal, everything pointed to the fact that the woman and her husband had lived happily and that he had been good to her, and had taken good care of her. It is known that the woman had been sick a great deal, had been to a hospital for a month or so, and was not well. In conversation with Mrs. George Battey of Portsmouth within the past few weeks, she had expressed herself as very despondent, saying that she did not think life was worth living, that she did not see why she lived, etc. Mrs. Hein had formerly worked for Mrs. Battey, and it is safe to say that she revealed to Mrs. Battey more of her despondency than to anyone else. It was developed in the evidence that sometime in May of this year Mrs. Hein said to her neighbor, Mrs. Bauer, that she was not long for this world, and that at that time she was apprehensive of impending death. These things lead most people to believe that the woman took her own life. Just when she was last alive it is hard to say. Mrs. Neibauer and her children, taking a lunch to her husband in the field, had occasion to go past the Hein house about five o'clock Saturday afternoon. At that time the family dog was loose, it being the custom to tie the dog at night. When Hein came home, he testified the dog was tied. So it is possible that Mrs. Hein was alive so late as five o'clock on Saturday afternoon. The affair is a very sad one and a great shock to the relatives and friends, as well as to their whole community. There is not, however, the slightest motive for the commission of a crime, and no evidence thereof, but much evidence of a suicide due to melancholia.
