Death occurred at St. Joseph's Hospital at Omaha, Nebraska, where Mr. Schumacher was a patient for six weeks, having successfully undergone two operations only to succumb to heart trouble. Mr. Schumacher was born in Port Washington, Wisconsin on September 14, 1850 and died March 16, 1923 at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 2 days. He was reared on a farm, attended the rural schools and latter with his family moved to Clinton, Wisconsin. On February 2, 1876, he was united in marriage to Susan Mainz. To this union ten children were born, three having preceding him in death. In 1880 he moved to Shelby County, Iowa where he farmed until 1915 when he retired and moved to Portsmouth, Iowa where he resided until his death. Mr. Schumacher saw all the hardships of Shelby County during its pioneer days and by his tireless efforts was able to gain a fine home where he and his family could spend their late years in comfort. He had a kind and genial disposition, always looking at the bright side of everything, and his absence will be keenly felt by the whole community. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Church, Requiem High Mass being sung by Rev. Julius Failenschmid. He was laid to rest in St. Mary's cemetery. Those left to mourn are his wife, seven children, Mrs. Frank (Elizabeth) Kuncl of Panama, Iowa; Tom Schumacher of Defiance, Iowa; Mrs. William (Mary) Nash, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) McLaughlin and Mrs. Albert (Amelia) Marsh all of Portsmouth, Iowa; Catherine and Irene at home; also 13 grandchildren, two brothers, two sisters, besides a host of friends. The pallbearers were John McLaughlin, Joe Gau, Richard A. Mester, Maurice J. Powers, John Herkenrath and William P. Monahan. Those from a distance attending the funeral were Nick Schumacher of Stockbridge, Wisconsin, John Schumacher of Clinton, Wisconsin, John Mainz of Buffalo, Minnesota, Tom Mahlberg and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mahlberg of Panama, Iowa.
