Mrs. Houser's maiden name was Shrope. She was born at Fremont, Pennsylvania, November 8, 1851. When five years of age she came to Cedar county, Iowa, with her parents and has lived here ever since. Mrs. Houser's maiden name was Shrope. She was born at Fremont, Pennsylvania, November 8, 1851. When five years of age she came to Cedar county, Iowa, with her parents and has lived here ever since. On March 12th., 1874, she became the wife of Jonas Houser, also a native of Pennsylvania. Seven children were born to this union only one of whom, Mrs. Alice Mayland, wife of R.C. Mayland, of Peoria, Illinois, surviving. Two sons died in infancy and three daughters died of diphtheria in 1891, their deaths being well remembered by the older residents of the community. In 1902 Mr. Houser was taken leaving the widow and her two daughters, Alice and Sue. On November 6, 1918, the younger daughter, Sue, passed to her reward survived by her mother and sister. And now only Mrs. Mayland remains of this family. Other near relatives who survive are: Mrs. Ezra Kohl, Harlan, Iowa; Mrs. Walter Jackson, State Center, Iowa; Miss Emma Shrope, Mechanicsville, all sisters. Franklin and Albert Shrope, brothers, of Mechanicsville. Mrs. Houser has been a member of the Presbyterian church for more than thirty years. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge of this place also. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon, Rev. E. Winslow Brown, D.D. officiating. A large concourse of friends paid their final tribute of respect to an old friend and neighbor at this service.
