ROBERT HANKS DIED LAST FRIDAY Deceased was one of early pioneers of the valley — People of Gering and surrounding community were shocked last Friday morning when the report was circulated that Mrs. Robert M. Hanks, one of the real pioneers of the North Platte valley had passed away early that morning at her home here in Gering. While the deceased had been in failing health for several years, few knew that she was in any immediate danger, therefore the news of her passing came as a distinct shock. It was generally understood among her friends the middle of the week that she had suffered a paralytic stoke, but later it was stated that the doctor had claimed that his report was unfounded and that her condition was brought about by other ailments generally attending old age. In her early childhood she united with the Presbyterian church, while residing at Hillsboro, Ill. When she came west, in 1886, she at once took up active church work in her new home and aided in the organization of the first Sunday school in what is now known as the Gering volley. There being no church of her faith here, she, with her husband, became charter members of the present Methodist church, of which organization she was an active member throughout the remainder of her life, taking every active part in the Sunday school work as well. Aside from this line of endeavor she assisted in the organization of the first W. C. T. U. in Gering and for many years she served this organization as it’s president, and as a reward for her untiring efforts was later made president of the county organization. To this excellent lady may be given much of the credit for the driving of the saloons out of Gering and this part of the state. She has at all times been a willing worker, practicing the things she taught ministering to the sick and needy, and as a result of her untiring efforts she built up a friendship throughout the western part of the state, in fact in every locality where she was known. Funeral services were confuted on Monday afternoon of this week from the Methodist church, Rev. E. H. Maynard being in charge, interment following in the Westlawn cemetery. Annetta Belle Kerr was born in Greenfield, Ohio, on June 22, 1860 and departed from this life on March 1, 1929, at the age of 68 years, eight months and six days. While still a young girl she, with her parents, moved to the state of Illinois where she resided until coming to Nebraska. On October 25, 1883 she was united in marriage to Robert M. Hanks, to which union two daughters were born, both of whom, with their father, survive. The daughters are: Miss Faye Hanks of Sheridan, Wyo., and Mrs. Alta Cooper of Gering. Four sisters and one brother also survive: Mrs. Ida Cromer, Gering; Mrs. Ella O’Leary, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mrs. Dora Bryant, Alexandria, Ind.; Mrs. Jessie Swain, Summitville, Ind.; and Chalmers Kerr of Fowlerton, Ind. Aside from these the deceased leads four grandchildren and a host of friends who freely offer their sympathy to the bereaved ones in this their hour of sorrow.
