Description	:	Annie Mae was the adopted daughter of Maderson/Madison Lawrence Ledford and Flora Poore - Ledford - Rogers, his first wife. Annie Mae's biological mother was named Lucile Boykin according to a local news article announcing the adoption in the Greenville newspaper. Lucile was unmarried and about 15 or 16 yrs old when Annie Mae was born. There were no other... Read More	Annie Mae was the adopted daughter of Maderson/Madison Lawrence Ledford and Flora Poore - Ledford - Rogers, his first wife. Annie Mae's biological mother was named Lucile Boykin according to a local news article announcing the adoption in the Greenville newspaper. Lucile was unmarried and about 15 or 16 yrs old when Annie Mae was born. On the 1920 census, Lucile was listed as 16 and living in the Salvation Army House and attending school, it said she could read and write and both she & her parents were born in NC. There were no other Boykin's listed in Greenville at this time, but there was a family in Anderson so she may have had cousins nearby. Nothing else is known for sure of Lucile, but there is a Lucille Boykin who married in NC in 1924 and lived a long life with several children and died in Virginia. Lawrence and Flora Ledford adopted Annie Mae in Greenville, SC in March 1920. Her death certificate says she was also born here. Annie Mae died at the Poinsett Mill village of "ileo - colitis" less than six months after the adoption. Her death certificate says she died at 5pm and was buried here in Springwood Cemetery on the same day. The informant was not Lawrence Ledford however, it listed HW Coker of Dunean Mills, and Coker said he did not know who Annie Mae's parents were because she was adopted. HW Coker is almost certainly Henry Washington Coker, Lawrence Ledford's step-father. Lawrence Ledford remarried 3 1/2 years later and again about 1927-9, Flora evidently did not marry again until 1948, two years before her death. Annie Mae seems to have been the only child they ever had. --Jeni
