UPSET OIL LAMP UPON STOVE. Oil, Blazing Up, Ignites First Mantel Drapery and Then Mrs. Hetterly's Clothing, and She is Frightfully Burned--Now in City Hospital. Mrs. Harry Hetterly, of Thurmont, was burned in a horrible manner yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Hetterly was preparing to bake bread, and had the loaves in the pans, ready to place them in the oven. The pans were on a mantel-piece, over the cook stove, where there was also a lamp. In getting the pans off the mantel-piece, Mrs. Hetterly accidently knocked the lamp off the shelf onto the stove. The bowl containing the oil broke and the oil, running out upon the stove, ignited. The flames ignited the drapery hanging to the mantel-piece, and when she attempted to extinguish the flames, her clothes caught fire. She became panic stricken and ran out of the house, and her clothes were burned off of her before aid reached her. She was horribly burned about the body. Dr. M. A. Birely was summoned and alleviated her sufferings temporarily and she was brought to the City Hospital, where at noon today, it was stated she was doing as well as could be expected." Death notice for Anna May Wheat Hetterly from the Frederick Daily News of Monday, January 18, 1909: "BURNS PROVE FATAL. Mrs. Anna Hetterly Dies at the Frederick City Hospital. Mrs. Anna Hetterly, wife of Mr. Harry Hetterly, died at the City Hospital yesterday about noon, from the effects of the burns received at the accident at her home in Thurmont on Friday. She was aged 28 years and 6 days. Besides her husband, she is survived by three children. Her remains were prepared for burial by Undertaker C. C. Carty and shipped to Thurmont over the W. F. & G. Railroad yesterday for interment." Funeral notice for Anna May Wheat Hetterly from the Frederick Daily News of Wednesday, January 20, 1909: "The funeral for Mrs. Annie Hetterly, who died from burns, took place yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Services were held in the United Brethren Church at Thurmont, conducted by Rev. Gordon J. Rider, assisted by Revs. Mr. Koontz, and W. L. Martin. The edifice was filled to its utmost capacity with sympathizing friends. The pallbearers were George Damuth, Emory Wisotzkey, Clarence Lydda; William Baltzoff, Howard Bollinger and George Wireman. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. M. L. Creager was the funeral director."
