Description	:	Anno was born in Beerta, Netherlands and later moved to Bellingwolde. His father's name was Kristiaan Kristjaans Hendriks but he and his brother Marten were the only two children known under the Kristjaans surname while other siblings used the Hindriks and Hinders surname. Military service was mandatory in the Netherlands and needed to be fulfilled before men could marry or emigrate. A certificate of military service was included in Anno and Stientje's marriage application. Anno and Stientje were married in the Netherlands after having trouble getting a marriage license because of the use of the Kristjaans surname. Their marriage application includes a 3-page letter from the court proving Anno's identify and certifying the surname is correct. Anno's occupation in 1877 is listed as a day laborer in Bellingwolde. Anno and Stientje had 7 of their children in the Netherlands. According to Nettie Christians Assink (Granddaughter), two daughters, Alice and Grace (probably Aaltje and Grietje), died and were buried in the Netherlands. The last thing the family did before leaving for America was to visit their graves. Anno and Stientje brought their family and Stientje's father, Nicklaas Veldhuis, to the US from the Netherlands in February 1893. The family was drawn to the U.S. through reports of it being "the land of opportunity" and glowing reports being sent back to family remaining in the "old country". According to Tena Abbas Peters, the trip was on a sailboat and they experienced a calm for four days as supplies ran low. It was an anxious time for those aboard the ship. Tena's mother, Nomke, was 16 at the time and was the family's oldest child. The family came by boat, then by train to Renwick, Iowa where Nick Veldhouse, Stientje's brother, met them. The family lived with Nick Veldhuis for a short time after their arrival in the US. Anno later moved to a farm north of Holmes, Iowa. Their daughter Tena was born shortly after the family arriving in Iowa. She was baptized in the country schoolhouse before Wright Christian Reformed Church was built. The family attended the Christian Reformed Church in the Netherlands at Bellingwolde and continued with the denomination in the US. After the family emigrated to America all the children changed the spelling of their last names from Kristjaans to Christians. Anno was the first janitor of the Wright Christian Reformed Church, according to the Centennial History of Classis Ostfriesland (published 2000), a history of the Christian Reformed Church Classis in Iowa. His salary was $5.00 per year. It is very likely that Stientje also assisted with the responsibilities. Stientje died in November, 1915 and Anno lived near the Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha for several years. In 1927 he moved into the home of his daughter, Nomke (Nancy) and her husband, Dan Abbas. He died in 1929 after falling down the stairs in the dark. He was buried in the Wright Christian Reformed Church Cemetery, about 6 miles southwest of Kanawha, Iowa. From Anno Kristjaans' death record, Wright County, Iowa: J.L.
