Seven victims perished in the tragic blaze... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From The Wolbach Messenger, March 3, 1960, transcribed by Linda Berney: Anton (Andy) Vopat was born July 7, 1882, the child of Joseph Vopat and his wife, Rosalie Liska, near Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. When he was six years of age, he came to the United States with his parents and the family settled in the vicinity of Wolbach. Upon the advice of his physician at the age of 20 Mr. Vopat started working out-doors. For about 27 years, he did mostly agricultural work, especially grain harvesting. When he was 47 years old, he moved to Omaha, where he was to spend the remaining years of his life. For the last 20 years, he had resided in the St. James Hotel and was among the victims of that tragic fire. At death he was 77 years, 7 months and 13 days of age. He never married. He leaves to mourn his passing one sister, Mrs. Josie Rochek of Omaha, four nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister. He had been baptized as an infant in the State Church of his native land. As a youth in this country, it is believed that he attended both the Methodist and Danish Lutheran Churches in Wolbach. Mr. Vopat was an avid reader and a student of history. He spoke four languages fluently. He continued to be active at his advanced age, and was still regularly employed as a caretaker at an Omaha estate.
